Issues with my new 50mm f1.8 lens while shooting video

I can't, for the life of me open the aperture down to f1.8

Does anybody have any experience with this lens?

T2i/550D and the lens I'm using is the cheap $100 Canon 50mm f1.8 lens.

So you can go from 2.0 all the way up to f22 ? (or whatever the close is) You just can't get it to 1.8?
Is this in both video and stills mode?

So if you continuously hold down the AV button and spin the wheel it goes closed but stops at 3.5 when you try to open it up???

This is another reason I advocate for purchasing lenses with aperture rings. I HATE electronic gizmos that should work and don't. And just fight you. I would not advocate for the Canon 50mm 1.8 for ANY reason over another quality manual lens.

Sorry, I know that doesn't help in this scenario, but it might help someone down the road trying to make a choice.

Oddly, I have the same cam and same lens in my hand right now and can't get it to replicate the problem. (never had the problem before)
Maybe try taking the lens off, pull the battery, put the battery back in and reinstall the lens???

try wiping the contacts off on body and lens.

my D300 had a problem where every time i install the battery grip it would not recognize it; i would fiddle with it, miss a shot or two, and then my battery would be dead and i would be very angered, to say the least. all it was was dirty contacts but still ruined a few shots. now i am in the habit of wiping all contacts before i put them together

+1 on that.

I do however have the 50mm 1.8 and for the price I can't complain. The 50mm 1.8 is a nice point and shoot auto still lens. I also have a number of faster 50mm manual lenses and it's 110% easier to work with when shooting video.

I actually just found KEH.com yesterday and the vintage lenses they have are awesome. I'm definitely purchasing my next lens with an aperture ring. Other than my aperture problem, the only other complaint I have is the focus ring is quite rough, but that was expected when I purchased the lens. It gets a great look for $100 lens. I'm happy with it overall.

Make sure you have your camera in Manual Settings.

Fully manual. That's the first this I double checked.

Yessir. Its weird. I just pulled the battery out to charge (left it on last night ). I'll pull it off in about an hour and see if anything changes.

I'll also make sure to clean the contacts.

KEH.com is great. Keep in mind that their ratings are based only on cosmetics, not glass condition or lens functionality, which are both thoroughly checked and ascertained to be in perfect working order. I ordered a 5d and some lenses from them about a month ago and am 100% pleased.

Make sure MF is engaged on your lens before turning the focus ring. Otherwise, on this lens, you could break it.

+1 on that.

+1

The only autofocus lens I have is a really wide angle one. (old wide manual focus lenses are expensive)

I just got a SMC Takumar 50 f/1.4 and a vivtar 28 f/2.5. Total price: $150, but I traded in my EF 50 f1.8 and so I only spent 90! (I know that 60 is a bit cheap for that, but it wasn't in the best condition...)

+1. I bought one and didn't have the same issue but then bought a Nikon 50mm 1.4 for cheaper and haven't picked up the Canon since.
