Iscorama Anamophic Lens Test

Ok, I just looked at the lens I shot that video on (before your reply) and I saw that it said "MC" on it. My Sankor does not appear to be multi-coated, it doesn't have that on the lens, and when I look through it at a bright light source I can see slight blue streaks.

I didn't see "MC" on my 50mm, but I did see that haze, and it doesn't flare much when I point it at a bright light, so I'm assuming it is multi-coated.

Oh wait, so the issue is that my 50mm was multi-coated (not the anamorphic)?

The anamorphic will still give you the anamorphic streaky flares even if it's muliticoated (my panasonic adapter will - and I'm pretty sure it's MC since it's such modern glass) - but using non-mc glass behind it will still have an effect, the fact that the anamorphic adapter is MC won't make the whole rig act as if it's mc.

That's super cool that the isco could be wide open and sharp - I hear so many great things about those lenses. Clearly these adapters and setups all work a little differently! Does the isco have a focusing ring? Maybe that's how it's able to line up the 2 planes for wide open work where as the panasonic is afocal so you can only line the planes up by stopping down the lens.

Here are a few shots I created with a Iscorama 50mm f2.8
( just the first 3 shots )

so....

i just adapted my isco to a canon 50m 1.4

what im looking to do now is get a few longer focal lengths...anyone have any luck slapping an insco on anything longer then a 70ish lens? and what lenses did you use?

Not much use in only a single focal length anamorphic...you gotta at least have two...one for wides and one for closeups.

anyone?

So you removed the back portion/glass from your Isco?

I just purchased a Kowa Prominar 35 1.5X rear thread said to be 54ish (I dont have it yet). anyone know anything about this lens? I think I got a deal, not sure. there seems to be little info on this particular Kowa. I have seen bits and pieces here and there. Anyone who has one or knows someone who has one please weigh in. thanks in advance.

That Isco 16mm footage looked unusably soft with most of the image completely blurred.

The Isco 50mm stuff looked much better.

First test with the kowa 35 1.5x I must say its surpassed my expectations in the first 5 hours of ownership.

Yes...shooting anamorphic will RUIN you FOREVER. I own over 30 of them, including 2 iscoramas, 5 Kowas, etc, etc... :( BTW...nice footy. Look like you're screwed forever too! :) Congrats!

so owning one good one doesnt cure you from obsessively looking for them huh?:) it has become part of my daily routine. I toyed with buying a anamorphic in early 2009 but I thought paying 600-800 dollars for a iscorama was too much:) That sounds ridiculous now. By the time I was serious it was far too late, unless I sold my car. BTW whether you know it or not guys like you have really blazed a trail on this board and others with your wealth of knowledge. I have been reading for a very long time, so thanks very much.

As far as I know...I was the first one to use vintage anamorphic glass (other than the Iscorama) on a DSLR. So...I was searching for the "best" glass. There wasn't anything out there as far as what worked, what didn't work...etc....I didn't even know if it would work AT ALL. So I just started buying up old anamorphic glass. What I found was astounding...no only did it work, but, it added a dimension that was unique. So....I ended up with an ENTIRE STABLE of anamorphic lenses. I sold two of my best...felt bad....and repurchased them...(lol). So, that's the tale of an anamorphic addict. :)

HAHA, that's cool!
So did you find any 'magic' combination of camera, lens and anamorphic lens? I heard the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 for some (lens design-) reason works significantely better than the much more expensive Nikon equivalent with the LA7200 on 5DmkII. Do you use diopters? How many combinations did you try out anyway with over 30 anamorphics? :)

I still haven't even worked through 1/100th of the potential variations. That said, the Keihan 16B with a Nikon F2.0 50mm is a VERY solid performer. I'm impressed with the early results on the Hypergonar... http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...rphic-lenses&p=2138691&viewfull=1#post2138691 My thread "Anamorphic SHootout" sadly hasn't been updated by me like it should. Thanks for the tip on the Sigma. I'll have to give it a try. I've shot with another ...that isn't reknown for it's quality, but it's flexibility is great. (Sigma 28-105) Yes I do use diopters too. I have some Achromats and also some cheaper stuff that just does the job...

I'll be trying to do better this year, as well as renting out the lenses that I have. My Iscoramas are a treasure for sure...there are many others I assure you. I'll try to do better. :(

take a pic of all your anamorphics on the table :)
Which one has biggest rear glass?

No need. :) Here you go. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?196822-Anamorphic-Shootout&p=1867301&viewfull=1#post1867301
Hypergonar and other larger cinema lenses. (I have a Bell and Howell this big, as well as a Kowa this big)
Bad news....I know that this isn't your REAL QUESTION. Because I had the same question.
Here's what I mean. A large "rear glass" will allow you to attach a large lens to it. Prime lenses are the main candidate, because you can't just zoom in past the rear lens. The problem is that these cinema lenses are also LONG (comparatively speaking).

The problem with it being LONG is that you need a longer focal length (and thus narrower) in order to NOT see the inner barrel of the lens.

So what you really want is "short and fat". Large rear glass, and as short as possible. These characteristics are found (best functional example) is the Iscorama 54. 77mm rear thread and very short. I hope this helps!

:)

HHL - Ha! We seem to have a similar addiction. I have that identical set of lenses!

*Edit strike that. Don't have the Panavision lens there.
