Iscorama Anamophic Lens Test

Hey Lee, did you used to have a crazy avatar? For some reason I recognise your name and seem to remember reading some long rant somewhere about avatars but never got to see the offending image!

:D

Yep, that was me !

Over at Cinema5D I think - quite a while back, a bunch of humourless bastards who whined and moaned about my animated avatar !!

Gave up posting there as humour of any kind seemed to be frowned upon - it made for quite a tiresome atmosphere.

yo echobase... regarding cine projector lenses in general

I have a large cine projector lens as well, and cobbled together a makeshift mount to use with 15mm rails. I played around with it until I found an Iscorama. Contrary to popular opinion, and as evidenced by your vimeo rough tests it is possible to make the lens focus at a close range - although not much closer that two or three meters in the tests I did. The general conclusions I reached were that an 85mm A lens works with a cine anamorphic projector lens and makes an interesting, pleasing image with nice flares and distinctive out of focus areas. Remember, with an 85mm you have the effective width of a lens half as long, which is a bit wider than what we are used to as a normal width...

These lenses as a whole are just too big to fool with. It's easier and cheaper to make them that size for a projector, and I suppose the large size might help them stay in focus once they are set... but man, they are BIG. It would a 138mm diopter to get them to shoot a medium close up of a person. Ultimately, they don't seem to do much better than little 16mm sankors, but if you can buy one cheap and happen to own a metal shop.... you can play with it.

Yep, sure is big an' heavy!. I wonder if it would possible to move the elements either closer together or further apart to get a different focus range?

Lol,

let's see it then!

Iscoramas, such a hugely inflated price... I've not seen one good narrative with a good reason to shoot on them yet, no offence to the guys that have spent £1k buying them :undecided

It would be, i modified anamorphic for 16mm projector and now i can focus from 1.5 meter to infinity with it and 50mm and more telephoto lenses.

Now i wondering if its worth to get anamorphic with biggest rear glass (68mm) and modify it ,because the ones with biggest glass are for 35mm projection and can focus only on infinity, if i would be able to modify them and get them to focus closer then this would be great.
Those projection lenses have 2 glasses in them , you must get rear and front glass closer together to be able to focus closer with your still lens behind them. But the ones for 35mm projection might be locked with long focus throw so you would have to take it apart and cutoff the bottom of metal tube with front glass to let it move closer to rear glass if its not physically possible right now.If i would have one then i would try that.

Cheer up. :D

It should come as a shock to you to realise that you may well not be privy to all work carried out by all the people who have bought Iscoramams. For all we know my own Iscorama was used on 2 short films for Greenpeace (admittedly not narrative) - a TV ad for a newspaper in the UK - a rather fantastic (even if I say it myself !! :P ) short film (TV not cinema) and a trailer for another film release (again for Greenpeace but separate from the above projects)

If I were to post any of these - I would be hung, drawn and quartered - and probably never work again for those clients.

It seems to me such an odd proposition to suppose that because good examples cannot be found through your own network of sources (Vimeo ? Youtube ?) then examples do not exist.

Oh it's not that I'm saying they don't exist, after all, my stuff isn't found online either. It's just I find it really silly to shoot in 2:35 ratio for anything except larger than life and big feature films. Greenpeace, okay an example to show the world wide problems and whatnot. Granted, if it's an off-the-top Guinness or Levi's advert that that can be for laughs. and is meant to be silllily epic. And they'd probably not be on an iscorama adapter but with really top notch expensive gear.

But besides that I can't say I've seen adapters (or especially the 2:35 ratio) used effectively on Vimeo, on YouTube, or at any film festivals. I just see lots of seriously un-used space unsuited to the story, and silly and poor framing.

Admittingly I probably would pay £300 for an iscorama to amuse myself with though.

That, and I'm probably abit bitter that I've been outbidded thrice by people that probably didn't utilise it properly anyway. Grr! lol
