Iscorama Anamophic Lens Test

Kholi - the diopters do change the FOV a bit...the change goes up the stronger the diopter.

squig - yes, 72...no real vignetting happens...if there is its soft...and im a huge fan of them anyways so im cool with it.

Let me know if you ever feel like selling any of your iscos.

I did a rough measurement of the lens to see what the actual feild of view is.

The 50mm isco i have measures out to match these numbers.

50mm Iscorama anamorphic = 29mm Full Frame 35mm Still camera
50mm Iscorama anamorphic = 22.5mm Super 35 full ap

give or take a few mm's...i did it by putting the camera on a tripod and measuring its distance from a wall in my house and lining up the edges of frame to match the edges of the wall...took those numbers into a 3d program and punched them into a few cameras...

to get more acurate results i would need to take it out side and measure up something larger and make sure im closer to dead nuts center on the wall...anyways....

Awesome. honestly I think it's a close enough measurement to get an idea of how to employ the lens.

The good thing is that it's close enough to 22mm on an S35 sized image to be used as a primary wide.

By adding light telephoto adapters you can get to longer focal lengths when neeeded.

The footage looks really great! I think I'm gonna go ahead and grab one.

Man now I want one of those lenses! Awesome Rich, I like your sensibility! 2nd montage was very moody. Were u directing that shoot and mucking around with the 5d, that's rad! Ps what happened to that car spot you shot on the 5d is it out of post yet ,can we see it!

Oh I forgot to ask, Rich: how are you treating this in post? Are you cropping a certain part of the image out (4:3) then stretching it?

the tele adapters sound like the way to go rather than the isco 54 as it's a bit soft and bloody heavy!

thx for the info rich I like a bit of subtle vignetting too. I just picked up a tiffen +1 cheap, are you using the +2 and +4 much with the isco?

makes more sense to just squash it vertically for 1080 output and stretch horizontally 6% for 2k.

How's that work? If you're looking to replicate the cinematic anamorphic look then wouldn't you shoot with the Isco Iris vertically instead of turned horizontally?

Then stretch it out from a square image so that the flares stretch?

yeah you shoot vertically but squashing or stretching gives the same result just if you stretch your 1920 pixels then you have to downscale cause it will be 2880 pixels wide. And if you crop a square first then you lose some of the width which is fine if you don't want as wide a shot. Squashing it vertically 1.5x gives you 1920x720 slight cropping to 1720 gives you a 2.39 aspect ratio. Or for full 2k you can squash to 870 pixels divide by 1.24x and stretch 1920 x1.26x = 2419 pixels and crop 331 = 2088 pixels for 2.4:1 full 2k cinemascope.

I think I'm not getting it because anamorphic was specifically to get a 4:3 image into a wide format. So Anamorphic glass projects an image onto a square plane and you stretch it back out for widescreen.

Seems like if you just stretch already wide footage then it's a different effect, although that's fine.

For example: RED's anamorphic mode is stretching a cropped image back out horizontally.

Waiting to hear what Rich's method was, though, because it looks damned spot on with true anamorphic footage.

instead of turning a 4:3 image to a 6:3 you get a 32:9 rather than a 16:9 with a 1.5x anamorphic lens, the effect is identical it's just a 1.5x horizontal compression of your source.

can someone tell me what i need to do to get a s35 feild of view on my 5d. is there a certain crop involved to make this happen? if so, can someone tell me and what is the standard frame size for most movies viewed in the theaters?

Rich,

Did you get your lens from kevincameras by any chance? I have been asking him about his lenses he sells and I assume it's the same one you have. One thing that disturbs me is that he wants a bunch of money for the 50mm anamoprhic, the description says "minty" yet he has told me not to expect good quality out of them. So is it worth it?

John

Hi - anyone who can help !

Where would I look to find an anamorphic lens like this (for the 5D2) ???

Cheers for any pointers.

L.

Just purchased a Iscorama 50mm anamorphic. Will be testing prob tomorrow. I think I saw Squig mention shooting with the lens in a vertical set up. Is there an advantage to the flare and bokeh doing this?

they occasionally show up on ebay there's one on there now, it has some issue with the aperture blades though so I'd ask questions first.

The quality might not be as good as a nikkor prime but it's good quality german glass and much better than that panasonic garbage for the DVX.

Yikes, did you buy that one from KevinCameras? Hope you didn't pay too much for it.

I called up one of the guys I got my old Pentax glass from back when I was testing and he said he actually knew someone with a few of these, or they had some and some other Iscorama lenses sitting in the back of their shop waiting to be inspected and sold. He'll get back to me asap but I can't see them costing more than about 250.00

Will let peoples know.

the way it used to be done is you would shoot vertical and then project horizontal to get scope. now in the digital world we can just stretch 1.5x horizontal in post or a combination of stretching and squashing as I've suggested in a previous post.

All of which you could show us by doing some stills with what you have.

Hopefully busy Rich can come back and tell us what he did. I assumed a traditional 4:3 frame and then cropped and stretched in post. I can't see bokeh and flares being the same any other wAy although I have seen footage from red pre anamorphic in camera days that was wide them stretched further and it actually has a distinct look to it I like.

Grr wish I wouldve kept my isco. Never realized a diopter wouldve made it work on the ultimate.
