Iscorama Anamophic Lens Test

Yeah I know but I don't have the cash for a zeiss set. So far I've only had trouble trying to match up the tair-11a. The jupiter-9 plays well with the nikkors and the yet to be acquired 50mm is big name japanese nikkor ai era so should be ok. I'm going to tweak the picture control settings to get the tair 11a to play nice. I have a nikkor 105mm and a 180mm so I could get by without the tair 135mm. All of my nikkors will probably need some picture control tweaking too.

don't you mean danny devito?

I just picked up a pentax super multicoated takumar 50mm f/1.4 with 8 blades and radioactive thorium glass! I'm going to keep it in my pants pocket to be sure I don't have any more kids. it was a toss up between it and the nikon 1.8 but the chance of becoming sterile was just too tempting.

Got the 5D2 + Nikon f/1.2 + Iscorama working together nicely - took a couple of extension rings . . .

The weird thing is that you appear to be able to focus with either the Iscorama or the Nikon ? (I don't understand either!?)

hehe cool my 8 blade takumar should be pretty cool then and I can flog my nikkor 1.4, I never liked the bokeh on the nikkor 1.4. The helios has great bokeh but it's not quite sharp enough for the isco. I think there's a nikkor 1.2 out there somewhere waiting for me though.

The Nikkor f/1.2 is a little soft / 'bloomy' at 1.2 (nothing too bad) - but is super sharp at 1.8 upwards . . . .

5D2 >> Nikon f/1.2 >> Iscorama >> +1 diopter.

Some junk footage - thrown onto the timeline - nothing as interesting as a person or an animal, just lampposts and flowers (it's the dead of night in Old London Town, everyone is either asleep, hiding or dead).

The +1 dipoter + f/1.2 + FF makes the DOF super shallow, about deep enough (50cm - 1m) to fit in a single person, so great for interviews and that sort of thing - but the Iscorama focus ring seems to be largely ornamental at this level of super shallow DOF !

Wow that's wide... you're pretty much getting 'cinerama' there...

heres some footage i shot earlier this year in nyc...i had a 50mm fl lens with a century optics anamorphic adaptor...works ok for wide shots...but really sucks when you throw it on a longer lens as focusing at wide aps are impossible...you have to stop it down so much that you might as well just use a regular lens.

isco is way better...

Yep, the Iscorama is close - (Cinerama is a little wider).

Cinerama = 1920 x 664 (2.89 : 1)
Iscorama = 1920 x 720 (2.66 : 1)
And a significant challenge to framing too. Why not crop from 2.67:1 to a standard like 2.39:1 aka 2.35 format?

Moreover, you don't need to low to 1080p. I'd keep my editing well above 2K in the mid-way to 3K in order to end with 2048x858@2K -- a DCI standard even if you'll end@1080; any other lower rez format (720p, SD) should come from there, not to be 'the' master. OK, I'm talking about gigs, not playground.

BTW, even 1.85:1@2K is 1998x1080 not 1920x(3 digits):

There's also an thread open @ cinema5D.com forums. Contribute there, please. I'll contact Matrox by kind suggestion of David Newmman (Cineform) trying to see a good route for anamorphic monitoring, especially for the use of Iscorama glass.

Thanks. Already seen, it does seem more SD than HD shot. But don't you have the original file? The original edited file would be OK.

I might do as this will help with any vignetting I get from using the Nikon f/1.2

I was working within 1920x1080 to make my life easy.

+ Vertically scaling 1920 x 1080 down to 1920 x 720 means the scaling algorithm should help with the 5D2s' aliasing issue.
