Is this the s35 sony that is rumored?

I think you guys are forgetting two words: Scarlet S35.

RED won't be insane enough not to come out with it next year.

It will make all other cameras dated overnight.

5K + RAW + HDR = unbeatable.

If they actually can keep a basic Scarlet S35 under 10K they might even hurt the "upper" buyers of the AF-100, who will use an external recorder, more expensive lenses, etc.

But their main target will be this new Sony S35 camera.

people have been saying that, well, forever. To the point that it's become an integral part of reds marketing. Not saying it won't come out this year, but when it does I have a feeling a usable package is going to end up well north of the 7 or 8k they've been talking about..

ps man that is an ugly cam! come on sony..

Er... I'm sure nobody has forgotten the Scarlet, but let's be honest, counting on anything close to a half announced release date with rumored features isn't a viable position anymore.

I'm excited about the AF100 and I'm ecited about Sony's new offerings. I'll be excited by Scarlet when they are actually in production and 3rd parites are testing with them. Until then I'm going to hold with Wired magazine's position on vaporware.

Scarlet will be out for sure but I am predicting tht it will cost around 17k to replace the Vacant place of the Red One. Buying a camera is always going to be a lose lose situation. Camera technology leap bound like Moore's Law, so unless you have projects that can make u money or repay for yr camera acquisition costs, you are already on the losing team. Trying to get an Internet forum to enforce, justify and rationalized your purchase is just silly.

P/S: Red only have sold around 8000 cams so far yet they are around 35,000 members on that forum tht sings nothing but Jim Jannard national anthem. What a brilliant form of viral marketing.

+1

From a business standpoint if you are buying an expensive camera and not making money then you already lost........ No one said these DSLRs were the best, we just said they were nice, affordable and provided an HD look that could definitely be showcased to the world as a professional project. No doubt that Sony camera looks beautiful, but the Sony PMW-F3 will cost well over $15K.

I think the Af100 will be an excellent camera at the $5k mark, while not the best it will be more than enough to shoot all of our projects..... It now boils down to story, actors, and everything else that makes any movie great.

If it wasn't for what Canon and the other DSLR's i don't think we would have this new wave of cameras today. We would still be stuck with DOF adapters and the like.

From Phil Bloom's blog:

"The NXCAM looks very interesting, although just a prototype box with a lens and little info so far it has great potential. It’s AVCHD so 24mb/s and the REALLY cool thing is it has EXACTLY the same S35 EXMOR sensor as it’s big brother the F3."

Very nice. He's still getting the Panny though!

holy crap, that "Convergence" video shot by F3 is impressive. Have we seen anything nearly as good from AF100? I really, really want the AF100 to be awesome, and pre-ordered one, but honestly the footage from F3 is making me rethink.

Has this been confirmed by Sony? Alister said he thought it was the NEX sensor, although I would of course guess that they were using a proper OLPF over it.

Well, if you want to shoot with $100K Arri primes, a $60k SR1 recorder, and then grade in a baselight like they did, then the $4695.00 AF-100 was never really your target anyway, right?

Someone at the launch in germany reported that Sony said it was the f3 sensor. I think that sony is just rationalising the component. Use the same sensor and just add more functionality etc... at different price point. Epic and scarlet s35 are two other good example of this system. The gh2 and Af-100 also share the same sensor, if surely everything else is different, just to maximise the ROI of these sensors.

Thinking about it I think that Sony does some very intelligent marketing. If it had showed the other way around, people would have said that Sony has put the sensor of $ 6000 euro camera into a euro 14000 euro one and would have cheapen (f3) the product a bit. Now with the timing of the announcement, everybody is going to say "Wow, they are putting the sensor of a 14000 euro camera in 6000 euro one". For sure we are not getting the slog and 4.4.4 but at first glance, marketing wise, it is very good for the new sony.

Last week I was reminded by Jim from red that the scarlet will be here before April. Wow what a good news, thinking about the investment, blah, blah, blah ... for him to respond to another post that red was not renown for their deadline, further to say that he hopes no one is quoting him on the delivery date. So if he himself says not to trust what he says!!!!!!!!!!! I will put it back in forgotten until their is a buy button on the red site.

If we are getting 10 bit hd-sdi output with a 12 stop of dynamic range and very low noise, it will be heaven. My... good enough camera for sure.

That's not fair. The AF100 crews.tv was shot on Ultra Primes as well. Several shots in the Convergence video used the Sony Primes. You do not need to buy the SR1 recorder, you can buy a CineDeck for $10K instead. That gives you 10-bit 4:4:4 plus a pull focus worthy monitor.

great observation

Interesting if it is really 1080/60p, or if it's like in AF100- where it's only slo-mo 60p playback, which you can't place on timeline without slo-mo effect. Interesting is the fact that sub 1K consumer camera can record 1080/60p, while 5K pro model can't.

Good point. And I think Barry already pointed out in another thread that most people would simply rent this gear vs actually owning it. It's obviously 6-8 months out, but Sony has prolly done what it wanted to - throw a bit of doubt on potential AF100 buyers who might have been on the fence.

The AF100 would still seem to be more a student/first timer friendly cam IMHO - a purely subjective feeling of course.
