Is this the RED Weapon?

Will be out of my pricepoint so I better don't think about it. But, lots of battletested Epics and Scarlets(dragon?) are coming. I have no red because I didn't like the colors but since the scarlet dragon I'm having my eye on it. Hope to catch a set for arround 10.000 this summer/autumn.

I can see their whole marketing ploy now. They will push the full frame sensor size this has and, again, ignorant people will think their projects "need" Red, or this huge sensor so they will, again, ask for Reds and think you are crazy that you'd shoot anything else. Unprofessional company but I have to admire them in same way I "admire" the team who make Transformers; it's the worst kind of junk food but it sells and sells WELL. I'll stick with Arri and Sony regardless.

Where did you hear this new Red camera will be full frame? I think it's just a new body with the same Dragon sensor.

Wow, talk about a non biased, rational analysis...

As consumers we should remember that none of the cameras from RED, ARRI, Canon, Sony or for that matter from any other company won't automatically create great films and help in earning money. Because of RED's marketing, every one and their grandfather will love to buy the camera. Again you will find the rental rates of the new RED camera hitting rock bottom.

If you are an owner operator, then think if this camera is going to increase your day rate. If so how much more money are you going to get with this camera. If one can't recover the cost of the camera (any camera) in couple of months, then it may be better to not buy. This new camera mania can be brutal if you don't have the clientele.

Hopefully their cameras continue to get better. It is good to have competition.

I'm sure Weapon will be a great camera. Everyone's personal opinions aside, its going to be a great 6K solution in a small package. For those who own and embrace the RED ecosystem, its very exciting. I'm sure it will change the fluidity of how Dragon is shot.

Just curious, but how much better can these cameras really get? Resolution is already there, dynamic range is arguably already there, raw and lossless compression of that raw is already there, sensor size is there. Aside from perhaps some new graphite sensor that exponentially increases low light capability, these cameras will still be producing amazing images 10-20 years from now in the right hands. Is it really just an ergonomic/efficiency thing at this point?

I think they can get far better. Integration of true manipulation of depth of field in post, focal length adjustments in post, refocusing, advance color science manipulation (just starting to touch the possibilities here)...more development in lossless compression and ease of post, super light weight for extended hand held, wireless high resolution transmission to eliminate the camera body all together. What if the body, and processing, was off set...and the lens more or less transmitted the data to the body that was tracking...you would be shooing with just a lens and a small transmitter. Also, what about internal, simple 3D, recording multiple shutter angles and frame rates at the same time...giving you the ability to record all flavors of slow motion and real time...in camera. Multiple codecs tracking in real time. Perspective manipulation and 3D real time tracking....ect....

I am dreaming...but yes...it "can" go much farther than it currently does.

Resolution, today, really depends on how you are delivering. If you are delivering to a big screen, there are definitely benefits. Also, if you are not, the ability to reframe, stabilize, and manipulate the image in post can be very valuable.

You could argue that these things take away the artistry of it all...others could argue that it enables you to capture what you would have wanted to capture in environments where it was not possible.

There are a many things to improve on the current dsmc body. Current Dragon sensor has a disappointing boot up time of 30 secs, for example, its not weather sealed and is easily prone to water from the top fans, the audio connectors are not very good- but do the job- and external monitoring is old technology. I really do like my Epic Dragon, but I can definitely see room for improvement. Some of the improvements reauired the redesign because the technology just wasn't there in 2010/11 when it was designed. Looking forward to what it presents to the table. Vista vision (FF equivalent) is confirmed- i think this will be something to be excited!

Looks like it still has open fans on the top from pictures posted. Maybe they are sealed in a way.

Is the Vista Vision sensor an additional option or equipped on all bodies? Wouldn't that cause some big issues with most users existing PL glass which was made for S35?

For the sensor size, That's the current million dollar question :) we are all guessing! As for the vista vision, the thing with red cameras is that you can shoot in "lower resolution" cropped modes- if theoreticaly Vista is 8k following current size and K increase , one can go back to 6K and shoot S35 at probably lower compression and higher frame rates than on the current Dragon
