Is this the RED Weapon?

No XLR or XLR mini

No XLR or XLR mini

Looking at this picture, I'm disappointed that there is no XLR or mini XLR on this cam. There was a glimmer of hope (on the other site) that there would be.

Everything else about this camera looks positive to me. Lighter, sleeker, and still compatible with some of the RED accessories. I know there are some posters on this site that don't like RED, but I think they are a pretty innovative company. A bit out of my price range for new products, but it seems like they have done better with every single release, they never seem to go backwards.

This conversation reminds me of a presentation I watched with footage shot with different cameras in 4K and HD and shown on two different displays, one HD and one 4K. Nobody sitting at recommended distances could tell what was 4K from what was HD when shown on either display.

The LOL part is shipping end of 2015. Blackmagic and Red should not be allowed to publish shipping dates anymore. The other LOL is who needs 8K? Everything is still mainly HD. The resolution game is nothing but a gimmick now. With all that I'm sure the Alexa will still be the favorite in cinema and Oscar nominations.

Totally agree on most levels, the one caveat is that as a guy who occasionally does stills, 8K is very useful as it approaches acceptable for many kinds of hybrid jobs.

Not to mention, 'pushing in' on 8k in post and still having a 4k shot to work with. And 35MP stills.

I think they just went for 8K because it was the easiest thing to do: use the same pixel design, put more pixels, you get bigger area (which is what they actually wanted, probably).

It's a Vista Vision sized sensor. That's why it's 8k.

If one more person says shooting in anything over HD is pointless I'm going to totally lose it. There are so many benefits from shooting in 4k, 6k etc... for HD deliverables that the applications are obvious. For film makers, shooting 8k provides the same benefits to a 4k theatrical release (and upcoming 4k Bluray / Digital) as shooting 4k does for HD.

The reality is that many people, yes even seasoned DP's, will once again watch test footage of this and that, "8K" and 1080, and will still, again, barely be able to tell the newest marketing ploys from cameras built back in "the old days" of 2011 or even 2008, when the still superior F35 was built.

I feel bad for a lot of the tech addicts in here and newbies who get so tied up into the marketing ideas of some companies stragety to keep afloat. Red has to do something as they are losing the market fast to Canon C300's and Sony F55's. This time it's not 4K like it was in 2007, but 8K by god! AND guess what, a bigger sensor which makes your dreams bigger!! and your movies (that no one will see) bigger too!!

Does any of this make a difference? Not really. You could always point to some difference but I could always counter that with another test or shot that would fool you all over again. The game goes on, and it is a game, make no mistake.

Many a seasoned DP hated digital because it wasn't as good as film. Which it wasn't for a long time. Now that it is better than film - at least, the 35mm film - they should just jump on the bandwagon.

This is becoming, as has been brought up before, a "99% performance for 25% the price" very quickly and the ROI won't be worth it with the exception of the very few.

Now, when the cinema quality lenses drop in price ...

Sure, but shooting with more cameras at the same time also offers advantages. So does having more lighting gear and trained people to set it up. More of everything does have it's advantages, but don't forget that with it can also come more headaches and more expense. Given the choice which would you rather shoot with? More resolution or more DR? More resolution or more nimble file sizes and workflow for a fast turnaround client? More resolution or more money in the bank? More resolution can be nice, but it's not the end all overriding goal for most people.

Same old dumb story, if you dont see use for 8K doesnt mean than somebody else dont have it (fashion industry, vfx industry, military, game industry, architecture, any other industry, transportation, space and aircraft companies, police, security, science, underwater exploration, goverment ... I remermber certain Mr. Dvorak back then who considered computer mouse like complete useless device, same Bill Gates with RAM memory etc etc :D Ultimate LOLs.

HD downscaled from good 4K source is so suprisingly better in details than from HD camera.

Well I had to look and it looks like a stunning camera. Unfortunately its too much camera for me, not that I wouldn't LOVE to own one.

A (very) vocal minority.

I'm not sure about minority. There is a thread full of disgruntled people saying they will not upgrade and threads popping up all over voicing their unhappiness. There is also a pool where 8 say they will upgrade to 8K, 3 say they will upgrade to weapon 6K, 24 say they don't care and a whooping 107 say they are disappointed. This doesn't look like a minority to me.
