Is there Something In The Water?

I'm just wondering if there's something in the water that is affecting our brains.
We are all eager waiting for any "GOOD" company to make our dream come true of making a camera with just a few little things:

1080p, 24fps, manual controls, no jello, and less compression.

Is that too much for Nikon, Canon or Panasonic?

I used to think that the market was ruled by consumers, but I was wrong.
It seems that they're NOT interested in making BIG MONEY. Well they don't need it. They're multimillionaire companies.
In the end all this benefits RED... The bad thing about Red is that you have to be in a waiting list to buy Scarlet.
All this is driving me NUT!
GREAT NEWS ABOUT NIKON D5000, HAHAHAHA. It's just another D90.

Please. Do you really think there's really big money in this area? Those requirements form a fairly small niche. That's why Canon can get away with 20fps at 1080p; it's just the way the markets work.

Other than the fluoride and the chlorine and the antibiotics and the heavy metals it's all good.

Well the GH1 looks promising. And there's a chance that the D400 might have a better spec.

market ruled by consumers? You're joking right

Yeah, I agree.

RED is where they actually listen to the customer. And if my budget allows I would actually pick up a scarlet, or at least rent one for more serious projects.

I look forward to seeing more from the GH1 though. But cheers to RED, and Panasonic.

It will be interesting to see how many Scarlets RED will be able to produce, and how long of a waiting list it might be.

Right now the D90 is great fun, but I really hope Nikon gives it's video side more serious attention.

I guess Panasonic has the edge. They gave us the DVX 100 and of course are leaders in the video camera industry. They also have a reputation to protect. Lets hope they put better care on the video side of the GH1.

A lot of us want a Scarlet, but how close is it? I would send my money tomorrow if it was available in the morning. We just have to wait and wait very patiently.

The market is ruled by the consumers. It just depends on which market is being focused on.

I'm looking forward to the GH1 myself. 10+ days to go, it seems!

....

Hey, what are your expectations? Full manual control, best image quality... for about 700,- bucks? The D5000 is just an entry level cam. If you want a better video mode wait for the D400 or D800. For sure there you gonna find it... ;-)

Well there was a leak a while ago about a D400 book coming out in July. And dealers have dropped the price on the D300 and are clearing out stock. I won't buy a GH1 until then just in case Nikon get the D400 right.

there's probably a lot of internal fights. if canon still camera department launches a 24fps, manual, etc product it would be the beginning of the end of their prosumer camcorder line. they need some time to adapt. until now they were doing their business slowly, with sony and panasonic, upgrading their product little by little, but ikonoskop, red etc change the game. a lot of brands disappeared because they were not able to react fast enough to the changes. if i were canon or nikon, i would of course quickly create a hasselblad style shaped product, with pro still photo and video functions, upgradable with shoulder mounts, hard drives, etc.

... until now they were doing their business slowly..... upgrading their product little by little...

Hmm..., actually this might be a real scenario. In that case we´ll see full manual control in 2-3 years. I hope you´re wrong........... :-)

Unfortunately, we (the indie film maker/ videographer type) probably make up less than 1% of the target market for cameras like the d90, 5DII etc.

We can live in hope that someone will see the gap in the market to make "some" extra cash, but let's not kid ourselves.... the perfect video DSLR is not a billion $ industry to chase.

Nikon is the leader in Stair-Stepping. Can't wait until all the other companies come out with their version of the "Stair-Stepping" effect then everybody in the world can use Matt's plugins!

All hail Nikon!

Finally someone with some sense!

Probably not as small as 1%. 5% maybe? I think there'd be enough people interested in this area to want a decent video DSLR (EVIL, whatever) to make that number.

On the flipside, if you read the whackos at DPReview forums, they all wish the video feature will die. :P

It's sad no one is able to turn out a decent 1080p 24fps manual control motion video camera with a proper sized sensor for a moderate price. It's sad because these manufacturers willingly don't want to make these. This stuff isn't rocket science anymore. I agree there must be something in the water, because this obvious design criteria is screaming for someone to come make me! -- please!!!! -- people are waiting to buy.

What has to be the problem for Panasonic and Canon...possibly Sony...is that there is no way in hell they will put a camera out that will pretty much destroy their current comsumer/prosumer market.

Think about it. Can you imagine if the 5D Mark II had all the manual controls, no rolling shutter problem, etc. etc. You could say goodbye to XL H1S, XL H1A, XHG1S etc. etc. sales...same with all others.

The only company that has nothing to loose but everything to gain is Nikon. They should be working their asses off to get a camera that could potentially be the king of the market at a price point that would be music to our ears....

"the perfect video DSLR is not a billion $ industry to chase"

I think it is especially for nikon

Nikon is the camera of the press photographer, those kiddies know what manual is on thier stills cameras and (like me) are bemused not to have manual on a motion camera

Press photographers are being arm twisted into learning motion for thier paper websites so need cameras with motion

The press photographer is not a large part of the market maybe 1% but they are the brand heros

All the wanabees/dads etc want a Nikon because Don Mcullin had one that stopped a bullet in Nam, Nikons are there at the olympics, Nikons are in Downing Street, at the Whitehouse, on the news every day

Nikon need to keep that place in the public eye - they have nearly lost it so many times in the digital era - it drives thier whole brand and in turn ALL of thier sales

I hope they realise this and are working on a D4 that will be a great camera

I see your point Morgan, and agree to a certain extent. Some people will definitely be swayed by that, but again... I think it is minimal.

Most consumers just buy because of good marketing campaigns, usually chasing high megapixels and maybe seeing a "Full HD at 20fps" type gymic!! Manual control, 24p etc.... 99% wouldn't care less and unfortunatly the big guns know this.

Nikon SHOULD be chasing the prosumer video market though, that is a no brainer.
