C500: Is there going to be a firmware update for the C 500 that includes Wide DR

I am curious about this since I have both the C 300 and 500 and would like to be able to match the cameras for the occasional 2 camera shoot . Having Wide Dr on the 500 would be greatly preferred.

I didn't mean this to be an unanswerable question.... Anyone with some info please chime in. I realize the 500 had DCI P# color space, DCI P3 + and Canon Gamut so there is no doubt something different about the 500 as compared to the 300, but it sure would be nice to have the 500 play well with the 300 as far as Wide DR goes.

I'd love to have it too, but I don't know of any current plans to implement it. I've had success recording the Wide DR lut from the 10-bit Monitor 2 output as ProRes on my Odyssey 7Q, though. But I haven't compared it directly with a C300 or 100 output. It would be nice to get that in the mxf files on-board.

With some CP editing I have gotten my C500 close~ish, but not perfect to the Wide DR profile with the C300. I would still like a Canon wide DR profile for the 500 as a base to work from in multi camera shooting situations.

I'd love to have wide DR recording to mxf available as a matching option for multi camera shoots with C500 & C 300. I suspect there are some structural differences between the 500 & 300 that might get in the way of such a scheme, but I can't tell for certain at this point.

It's a CP (Custom Picture) setting. Originally available on the C100, then was added to the C300 on the last firmware update. Basically, it's a flat gamma curve, that's not as flat as Clog.

To be clear, what I am asking for is a factory CP for the 500 that matches the Wide DR profile from the C300. I know that Wide DR is not as flat as c log but the color science for Wide DR seems somewhat different from previous Canon Firmware and so I'd like to have that on the 500 too since my 500 can play the role of a 300 on some days. Since some of the Wide DR parameters are not accessible, having canon issue a wide DR profile for the 500 would seem to be the easiest way out.

Hi Mark, I find myself in the same boat. Do you have a link to the settings you are referring to?

My thought is that C500 has the exact same sensor as C300/C100, only the Colour Filter Array (CFA) in front of the sensor is different, C100/C300 have standard Rec.709 CFA, while C500 has a different CFA that allows a much wider colour gamut like DCI P3+ or Cinema Gamut, which is able to cover 100% Rec.2020.

The Wide DR profile on the C300 & C100 is a hybrid gamma curve of the standard Cine1 and Clog curve. Its an exposure curve and has nothing to do with colour. Yes the C500 has cinema gamut and DCI P3 and DCI P3+ but it doesn't have the same gamma (wide DR) as the c300 or c100. It can output the wide DR through the MON outputs for recording but can't record to CF in Wide DR gamma profile which could be useful for using your C500 in a run and gun/doco style or for matching to other C300/100 cameras in a multi camera situation. I think Canon feel that the C500 is only used on higher end productions but Im sure other people like myself use the camera for both lower budget and high end shoots. If canon is listening please include this in the next update.
