Is there a way to hack an ipad to do HDMI in so you could use it as a monitor?

I'm guessing this question has already come up. If there's a way, the ipad could be a very inexpensive high quality display device.

I'm curious to what hardware and software changes need to happen to make it an option. You can jailbreak and ipad, I guess it's a hardware issue after that...

i guess, if you were a hardware engineer you could bust one apart and kludge on all the proper scalers or whatever and solder in an input. but why would you want to go through all of that. probably losing ipad functionality when a proper monitor can be had for near the same price as an ipad?

this is like asking if you can use a microwave as a fondue pot ; )

it would be a neat feature though. it might show up in version 3 or 4...

But a microwave can at least melt cheese. There's no video in on an iPad.

I'd think that if you had those skills & that inclination, you'd be better off just building something up from scratch, like Cinedeck, for example.

besides, there are way cheaper tablets than an iPad if this is what you want to do with it. If you just want a cheap high resolution tablet to use as an external monitor, the Nook Color is a steal (Its been rooted to run full Android, you can take away all the B&N *$%& if you want and have a fully featured Android tablet with an e-reader color display for a couple hundred bucks!).

But yes, since none of these have video inputs the preview would have to be software-based, which means running like a slide show (like the way some folks suggested using the desktop canon tools to connect a laptop for previewing over USB. Just not practical at such a slow refresh frame rate).

So, you are indicating that way cheaper tablets also do not support the OP's original inquiry?

LOL- well, that wasn't my angle, but sure.

The OP said this has probably been asked before because it would be a great "inexpensive high quality display device", and I'm just saying that its not necessarily the obvious choice for something cheap with a high quality display. Not to mention that honestly, with Apple's app policies and whatnot, if someone were to hack together a half-decent software-based solution, it would probably be easier to develop for Android.

But sure, either way works I guess.

With regards to the comment "Why don't you get a real monitor? It's as much as an Ipad" I'm inclined to say that there aren't a lot of 10" IPS monitors with built in batteries that run for hours on a charge that you can buy for $500. A "proper" high quality monitor for camera use is going to run in the +1000 range, and some of them are still displaying only 720x480. The ipad would make an EXCELLENT director/client's monitor if you could only get live video to run on it without a $1500 add on (Teradek).

my android phone has an 800x480 screen, and is always with me

the newer HTC desire HD2 is 4.3" 960x540 and has an hdmi port (I guess only out)

with hdmi-in and some nice software, any of these could make a kick-ass field monitor or viewfinder (with a loupe), for precisely $0 (as they're already on many people's pockets)

plus it has a touchscreen and usb port, so you could even dream about controlling the camera from there...

is there a way to make cheese fondue with an ipad ?
I mean, hacking the hardware, you could make it hot enough to melt cheese or cook an egg ?

I'm still working on my "coffee maker" hack, right after I put the finishing touches on my mind-controlled camera that can film epics in the style of famous directors on a whim.
