Is the EX1 Image Quality any better than the best DSLRs?

Both have different pros and cons. EX1 cant shoot cinestyle or that flat. But you can adjust HSL leveling and knee points to deal with exposure if you havent no grad filters.

I shot this with an EX1 and 35mm adapter this year. I have a CANON 60d too, both great dslr is sharper but has a complete different look baked in then the ex1.

Please check this out, keep up the support .

My 1080p is better than your 1080p!

LOL, seriously though this thread is called "Is the EX1 Image Quality any better than the best DSLRs?" So you better believe its users are going to defend it. Perhaps it's time to close this thread because it's going nowhere at this point, right?

Chad, the answer is no for a wide variety of reasons.

From unsophisticated picture profiles, ND filters, resolution and a bunch of other reasons. Its not that DSLRs aren't good in dynamic range, changeable lenses or DOF control, its that they lack so much more in other areas.

All anyone has to do is look at the 2nd installment of the Zacuto" Shootout" to see how pathetically poor the DSLRs performed ( The GH-2 wasn't tested,
unfortunately).

Your comparing a 2,500 camera against a 60,000 plus camera. I think for the price difference the dslr's did a great job. Lets face it, the avg viewer doesn't look at the resolution, if the story is good they watch it, balir witch proved that years ago.

The whole concept of EX1 vs. dSLR is flawed from the get go. You're comparing a $6000 camera to ones that cost $1000. I find it odd that Zacuto even does these shootouts considering all the dSLR accessories they sell. Sort of shooting themselves in the foot, isn't it?

Though the shootout showed that the DSLRs aren't equal to the pro cameras, it also showed how far DSLRs have come. I saw a lot of complements going to the DSLRs, and I think this is good marketing for them. It's not like someone with a 1,000.00 budget is going to go get a 6.300.00 EX1r because of this. This shootout is good all around.

According to Barry Green and madp earlier in this thread the audience "laughed out loud" at the dSLR footage. I'd hardly call that good marketing for dSLR products. The head guy over at Zacuto even said, and I quote, "The Great Camera Shootout 2011 (GCS2011) is currently in production and it's purpose is to showcase digital cinema cameras." So, if the purpose was to showcase DIGITAL CINEMA CAMERAS why were dSLRs included at all, other than to purposely try to skew the results? He apparently considers dSLRs to be "digital cinema cameras" unlike what madp was trying to state earlier in this thread. It seems the real purpose of the Zacuto Shootout was to compare apples to oranges and, not surprisingly, all they proved was that they are two different fruits.

The purpose of the SCCE (Single Chip Camera Evaluation) was to evaluate the large-sensor cameras that were being used by cinematographers to produce filmlike footage. It is not, and was not, organized by Zacuto. It was organized by Bob Primes, ASC, and involved some 140+ professionals working very hard to get it "right." Zacuto sponsored it and made a documentary about it. But the purposes of the evaluation had nothing to do with "marketing DSLR accessories", it was to evaluate these products and find out how they actually perform.

Here's a very funny "Open Letter to Canon" video. A bit off topic, but it somehow relates to the mindset of the young DSLR enthusiast who thinks that if they just get the camera, everything will be OK...

Hmm - apologies about this, was posting after about two pages and suddenly I see (post-posting, if you see what I mean) we're up to 14 pages. I think my history is up the swanee, but charging on regardless...

EX1 vs DSLR (and an FS100):

EX1 is detail king, but a little noisy and it's not a DoF thing. 5Dmk2 does lovely portraits, but at expense of dynamic range and detail (yes, I use Techinicolor). FS100 is predictably somewhere in the middle, which is what it's sold as, and I like it.

I still shoot Chromakey talking heads on the EX1, I shoot beauty shots and straight talking heads on the FS100, I shoot stills and stealth on the Canon. It's nice to have choice.

Your Mileage May Vary.

I shoot mostly wedding and I own the EX1 & 5DM2

I uses both cameras during the weedings. 2 things EX1 can't do which I have to rely on 5D, ultra wide angle shoot (16mm) and flying on a glidecam HD2000.

All cameras got their good and bad, it depends on the operator how he wants to fully utilize each.

Wow...this thread is still alive?

Yeah I just wanted to know if DSLRs have caught up yet.

I'd say yes when it comes to the GH-x series of cams. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I'd say don't weigh your perception on a few opinions....look around for more "unbiased" opinions.

As far as that Zacuto shootout... as I've mentioned eslewhere...I bet they wouldn't have laughed if the (non-hacked) GH-2 was included (that's just my speculation of course). :) But seriously check out this guy's experience with shooting Arri Alexa vs GH-2 vs Sony F3:

http://www.personal-view.com/talks/...-arri-alexa-and-f3-real-world-testing#Item_19

Goes to show that nothing is ever clear cut as some would want you to believe. And yes...this was a hacked GH-2 (not even the latest GOP 1 hack). Who says one can't compare a $1,000 camera to a $60,000 one? If we are talking about the hardware/features...then yes....there's no contest. But overall image to image....why not? Don't expect miracles from the lower costing camera....but how they hold up to one another....is not necessarily night an day.

FYI I don't know if you have been following the hack lately but the little GH-2 is now shooting a form of AVC-Intra. It's still 4:2:0 but the motion is much much better than any DSLR out there (and a lot of prosumer cameras to boot). As someone mentioned....it looks as if the hack removed a layer of blur from the image. The stock footage was sharp enough....but this latest hack enhanced it quite a bit. Plus...Vitaliy and Chris Brandin have been working on custom picture profiles. That is expected to happen in the next iteration of the hack.
