Is the EX1 Image Quality any better than the best DSLRs?

It's kind of an Apples vs Oranges question. They're very different cameras. The big difference being the size of the imager. The EX1 uses a 1/2" chip, whereas the DSLRs use a full frame 35mm chip. That's a huge difference. That allows the DSLR to use 35mm lenses and get the characteristics of those lenses, one of which is the shallow DOF. That being said, when you consider the "total" or "whole" of the cameras, I still believe the EX1 is a far superior camera than any DSLR. I make a living with my EX1. I would have some difficulties doing so with a DSLR because of some of the serious drawbacks they present.

I've found with the EX1r that you have to get the exposure dead on to take advantage of all the camera's image potential. Any over or under exposure and you run into loss of image quality. IMO the best way is to use a waveform-enabled external monitor. This is also useful when matching with other dissimilar cameras. Because the sensors are 1/2" the shallow DOF is tougher to achieve, but if you have full control over the lighting it's doable.

I have the EX1 and an F3. The EX1 zoomed in can look very much like the F3 zoomed out. Sadly I'll probably have to sell my EX1 and Letus Extreme. The F3 ain't cheap.

I also have had two DSLRs (one now). The DSLR looks great online, but not when you blow it up. I strongly suggest you look at part two of the Zacuto big sensor shoot out. Its very enlightening. (Firefox can't see the video.)

The DSLRs do have decent dynamic range and DOF control, but resolution, moire and aliasing on top of compression issues are too big in many situations other than webcast.

I'll take it off your hands. I am looking to buy an Ex1,PM me
