Is the 5d Mark II really worth the price difference from 7D?

There's also a small resolution gain vs the 7D. See the latest Single Chip Camera shootout videos to see this.

Agreed on the 24 1.4 images reem 12. The real advantage of the 5D is on the wide shots. For telephoto work the 7D is actually better in some aspects. I occasionally shoot motorsports and the best DSLR camera for the job is neither the 7D or the 5D, but the 1D Mark IV, which is 1.3x crop factor.

Here's a video shot with the 7D and 1D Mark IV. Specially look into the intro shots, the shot with the biker with the white helmet was done with the 24 1.4 with the 1D Mark IV. Since I needed slowmotion, the 7D and the 1D Mark IV were the only options.

If you need slow motion, the 5D is not what you want. But if you want a stunning look, with amazing DOF and a unique almost 65mm look to your footage, the 5D is your camera. I think watching the previous House season finale is a great showcase for the 5D look.

This is all really interesting for me as I don't understand this exactly and would really like to.

I understand the 5D can mimic the 7D field of view and depth of field. But this doesn't work the other way around... and thats because of DOF correct? For instance a 7D with a 16mm lens would be a fairly close equivalent field of view to the 5D with a 24mm, except if their both set at f2.8 their DOF would be different? And the 5D can mimic the DOF of the 7D (by closing the lens a )stop and doubling the iso) but the 7D doesn't have that DOF flexibility, correct? But why do cameras have different DOF properties, such as the 5D having a stop more DOF (is that the way to say it?) or is this all just part of then lens?

Why exactly is the 5D bad for slow motion? Also could you elaborate on why you feel the 5D look is almost 65mm?

The 7D can match the 5D's DOF and FOV, you just have to use wider lenses and more-open f-stops.

Ok gotcha. Although if I understand correct that'd can be hard to do with shallow depth of field unless you have really fast lenses for the 7D.

But how come the 5D and the 7D have different DOF for an equivalent focal length at the same f-stop? Is it because of the sensor sensitivity is different and the 5D is taking in more light for the same f-stop?

You don't need shallower DOF than a APS-C with a fast prime lens for filmmaking, honestly.

*continues to use 5D anyways*

lol... these discussions... The reasons to get a 5D are:

a) Unique sensor size (also known as frakking epic)
b) More accurate downsampling to 1080p (although still not 1080p)
c) You have a slightest serious ambition in photography, fullframe is what will make the difference between a paid gig and shooting your counsin's kids

Well, that depends on how shallow you want it. The 7D exactly matches the DOF characteristics of 35mm movie film. The 5D is artificially hyper-shallow.

They don't. The DOF will be identical. But the framing will be different. And when you equalize out the framing, you either have to use a wider lens, or back up -- and both of those cause the DOF to become deeper.

You should tell that to the 1D IV owners :/

Awesome thanks.

The 1D IV is a sports/reportage camera... it is a different animal entirely.

So sports/reportage photographers don't have serious ambition in photography?

See what I'm getting at? APS-C and APS-H work excellent for many uses, especially if you're shooting very telephoto.

Why exactly is the 5D bad for slow motion?

The 5D can only shoot at normal frame rates. It does not have the option of 720/60p (overcranking) like other DSLRs have. You can slow the footage down if you want to, but you won't get a glassy smooth (or even relatively smooth) image because it will double your frames.

thanks alex but i mean is there somewhere i can compare footage from both on the same subject? or maybe download the files?

Look at the Zacuto Shootout. Both the 5DMkII and the 7D are tested alongside the Alexa and Red using the same lens.

...oh, and the humor part. Let's save that for another bestseller!

All I was saying is that there is a huge professional market for photographers who use and want APS-C or APS-H cameras.
