FS5: Is it worth it to hold out for Shogun Inferno, or just invest in 7Q+ instead?

Just wondering, does the FS7 record 10bit 422 at 60fps at XAVC-I ? I think the FS7 only do 8bit 420 with XAVC-L ?

The unclear part is whether the HDMI is 8-bit at all frame rates, or just frame rates above 30.

Well, as I stated elsewhere, I asked Sony Prime Support and their answer is (in relation to both UHD and 4K DCI):

- 10 bit 4:2:2 up to 30p
- 8 bit 4:2:0 above

As an owner of the 7Q, I am constantly amazed at the features packed into what in effect is a recording monitor. Granted some of the features are wasted on me such as the live switching but there was a time I made a living doing excercise videos and what I would have given to have an Odyssey in those days--the Beta days.
However I do wish CD would release DNxHD. The newly released ProRes Proxy is a great alternative to those of us who only need 4:2:2 50 but the Avid codec would make a nearly perfect device...perfect!
Love to see a timeline on that!

+1. Lack of DNxHR plus the (otherwise great) monitor without HDR option make me look at the Inferno...

Just an update on the Shogun Inferno:

The latest firmware is broken.

It has a horrible interlacing/artifacting problem when shooting at 24/25/30p in both 2K and 4K. Atomos have acknowledged the problem (though not publicly) and said it will be addressed in the next firmware release. This is happening on both the FS700 and FS5, though may not be limited to those cameras.

It still works fine in 50p/60p and above. So right now you can choose between rolling back to the old firmware and not having the HFR, or you can use the new firmware to access HFR, and shoot all your real-time stuff at 50p or 60p, at the cost of using twice as much space on the SSD.

I noticed that the resolution of the zoom is poor when in frame rates 59.94P. Also the zoom is limited to 1:1 for DCI 4K and UHD input at that frame rate.

The image appears jagged on diagonal edges. This jaggedness is not present at 23.98P and the zoom available goes to 2:1.

As for the 4:2:2 vs 4:2:0 HDMI out conundrum, I recorded two short clips of some VU meters that were backlit by blue LEDs today. I recorded one clip at 23.98 and the other at 59.94 frames/sec and compared both recordings at 200% magnification in Premiere. I'll be darned if I can tell any difference in the amount of chroma smear/blur in either clip. But for a slight difference in exposure, they look identical. Maybe they're BOTH 4:2:0?

Mark - record a single, saturated color object (like a red flower), and blow it 200% on a large enough screen. The 4:2:0 version will have both horizontal and vertical black jaggies across it; with 4:2:2 the horizontal jaginess is gone (of course when one knows where to look, the jaggies are visible without zooming in - just a large display will suffice).

I have just receive my Inferno; still waiting for the XDCA and a set of proper signal cables (both HDMI 2.0a and SDI). Will test and comment here in a couple of days.

Hi Piotr,

I've shot this red LED display twice, one at 23.976 and one at 59.94 frames/sec onto the Shogun, at DCI 4K resolution. The following images are a small crop (this was filmed with a 35mm lens at f/4 from a distance of 9'.

SHGINF_23976.Still002.jpg
SHGINF_5994.Still001.jpg

As you can see, they both look pretty darned the same.

I remember using this test with my EX1 years ago, to test the Samurai's 4:2:2 vs. the 4:2:0 of the XDCam MPEG footage and the difference was dramatic. Not the case here.

BTW, congratulations on your Inferno purchase. I think you'll be happy with it.

Mark - not being able to enlarge the pictures, I can't really say much. I will know more after my own tests with the Inferno... Cheers,

Piotr

The difference between my XDCam footage and my Samurai footage was obvious at 100% scale. The XDCam footage actually had vertical line like artifacts distorting the numerals on the LED display and the difference between that and the higher color resolution Samurai recording was dramatic at normal viewing conditions. One was legible and the other was not.

Even with the 8.0 fw, the zoom resolution in focus assist mode is useless in my opinion - very, very soft image! BUT there is a good news: today I shot a beautiful, sunny & snowy landscape in S-log2, and I must say the almost 800 Mbps (in UHD@25p !!!) DNxHD HQX codec is SOOO much nicer than the internal FS7 codec (even the XAVC-I). Absolutely stunning in HDR on my Samsung SUHD! AND, no noise in shadows: nada, niente, nothing.

I only hope Atomos will improve the focus assist tools:

- sharper zoom modes
- adjustable peaking intensity

Having read the above posts, I passed on the 8.1 and am waiting for the next fw. But - so far, so good!

Piotr

8.1 is worthwhile, because it enables DCI 4K resolution at 60FPS.

Atomos is working on the banding problem in shadow areas.

I've also made them aware of the drop in display resolution at frame rates above 30P.

One thing that is strange to me with Atomos is that even the DNxHR codec files are wrapped in QuickTime (.mov), which on a Windows computer makes them unreadable by any applications with the lucky exception of Resolve (which I'm using). But no software player will play them back outside Resolve (not even VLC, Potplayer or MPC-HC); even good old Vegas Pro will not load them!

You need to install the AVID Codecs LE version for computers without Media Composer.

Isn't the free LE package DNxHD only?

Piotr

OK - I installed bot QTfW and the Avid LE codec pack; now VP14 opens my Shogun DNxHR files just fine (frankly I don't know which helped). But stand-alone players still only recognize audio...

Quicktime is annoying on PCs because the QT subsystem is only 32-bit and Apple has no plans to release 64-bit QT for the Windows environment. Thus, QT video takes a 50% hit on performance, over uncompressed and over MPEG of the same resolution/frame rate.

i test FS5 RAW with atomos inferno in super slowmotion 2k 200fps to apple prores but when playback in my hardisk prores inferno file is realtime not slowmotion need to interpret footage

mode.

* Shogun Inferno now compatible with Sony PS4 Pro HDR output for high quality
game recording.

Bug Fixes:
• Further improvements to disk compatibility and reliability.
See atomos.com/drives for latest compatible drives 4Kp60/30/25/24 drives.
• Fixed Sony 4Kp25/30 raw to ProRes/DNx interlaced scan lines when panning.
• Panasonic GH5 and Fuji XT2 support for 10bit output has been added.
• Sony PS4 4kp60/HDR support added.
• Super smooth monitoring of all video frame rates via switchable 48/50/60 Hz frequency based
on input frame rate

Hope they fixed the wierd looking slow-motion as well. That promo for the previous firmware which enabled the HFR on Sony cameras looked really strange in 200fps? Anyone know if this has been fixed?
