F5: Is it me or is SONY is making a flop with F5/F55?

I read this - thought it might improve the performance from slower dslr lenses for doco style coverage - not sure it would work with the optitek adaptor for aperture control though.

I think you've confused yourself as to how this all works. It's pretty simple, the Metabones (both speedbooster and and normal version) can adapt EOS lenses -> Sony e-mount (and eventually micro 4/3), but they don't have a version that goes from EOS -> Fz mount (which the F3, F5 and F55 use).

Adding an Optitek "between" them is impossible - the Optitek goes from EOS -> Fz, you're suggestion would imply that you'd be going EOS->E-Mount->EOS->Fz...

The camera you carry is meaningless if you miss the shot entirely. 2/3" cameras can move really fast.

Perfectly put, I love my f55 but the 800 is still a better tool for some jobs......

(Sparky I agree with you, this is kind of what I was aluding I really do love shooting on the F55..... but I stil use the 800 ........ alot!)

This sentence caught my attention me from the article -

"The Metabones Speed Booster adapter addresses the biggest complaint people seem to have have of the Blackmagic (sensor size) – giving it a near-Super 35mm sensor – and turns the FS100, FS700 and Sony’s 4K monsters the F5 and F55 into full frame video cameras.

My background is 2/3 inch eng - I am used to lenses with considerable coverage. This thread has been very helpful.

Ah, the article is wrong unfortunately. Different mounts between the F3, F5 and F55 vs the FS100 and 700.

Wouldn't the Speedbooster work if you attached it to an FZ > Sony E-mount adapter? (or does it need the electrical contacts of a live E-mount?)

I don't think I would want to attach an adapter to an adapter. And at least the latest "smart" version does require electrical contacts.

Well, to go back to the original inflammatory post in the thread, I think we can conclude that Sony has not made a flop with the New F.

Maybe mechanically.

But the Speedbooster shrinks the projected image of a full frame lens down to an image circle that would not cover S35.

So it's really a no-go all around.

I would like a Sony kit for F55 comparable to the F5, viewfinder, battery and charger, shoulder mount, optitek, case....and internal 4k XAVC codec. For me external raw recorder for 4k would be a hassle.

Both FZ mount and E-mount have 18mm flange distance. You can't make an adapter (without including image degrading glass in the adapter) when both mounts have the same flange distance. The same rule applies to E-mount to EOS mount adapter. You can turn E mount into EOS mount via adapter, but you can't turn EOS mount into E-mount, as the E-mount has smaller flange distance. That's why it's a plus if the native mount has small flanger distance. It is flexible and can be adapted to other mounts that have larger flange distance.

E and FZ both have small flange distance. They are not interchangeable as both of them have the same small flange distance (18mm).

However all this is irrelevant. Metabones can build an EOS to FZ mount adapter itself. That is very much possible, and I am sure will happen in the next six to 12 months.

Evilthought hit the nail on the head on all counts. Here's hoping for a huge range of speed boosters from metabones over the next year or so - particularly and eos - fz.

I think that on the rc podcast they talked about metabones making an FZ mount version. I have the eos - nex version and it really is a great piece of kit. Makes the fs700 look like a full frame camera.

The Alura 2x extender is designed specifically for those lenses and nothing else. The Alura zooms are all T2.8 so that is the limiting factor designed into the 2x as well. If you put a faster lens on it not only is the minimum aperture truncated to T2.8 (so therefor a T5.6 after passing through the 2x), but the image quality suffers greatly.

The PLx2 has a minimum aperture of T1.8. We've put Ultra Primes on it with great success. The PLx2 in our testing offers the finest optical performance and also accepts the greatest range of lenses. It has the fastest minimum aperture at T1.8, the highest telecentricity for best optical performance and the deepest clearance to accept the widest possible array of lenses. On these benchmarks and others the PLx2 outperforms all other 2x extenders.
