C100: Is C100 still worth the purchase?

Great insights as always to peoples differing views and experiences with the cameras in and around the C100.
drifting....as a matter of interest.....when you go on overseas trips do you take two C100s in case???

I am amazed with the few instances of people working with multiple camera setups...

I think using the camera for what it was made for is the winner - if you rig up a DSLR to be like a C100 then you might as well buy a C100. If you rig up a C100 to be like a C300 then you might as well buy a C300.

Yeah except the C100 doesn't do three things that I absolutely need my B-cam to do. Time-lapse. Work on a pistol grip gimbal stabilizer. And fit in a bag with my A-cam, audio and lenses that will go under the seat of a Canada Regional Jet.

Remember the FS5 is a brand new camera, and the C100 is 4 years old now.

I think that's my point. I agree with your assesment that the MKII was not so much a refresh as a correction for past mistakes. So really the C100 is long overdue for a refresh. Whether Canon understands this or not is debatable. I think Canon would be mistaken to think everything is hunky-dory with their low-end offerings. (Don't get me started on the XC10)

...FS5 footage...

Sadly I don't think we'll see raw in a new C100.

If it's important to you to be able to do it then it's another feature Sony will beat Canon with.

He's using the raw output to go to a Shogun to record 4K 10 bit 422 ProRes. I'd be more in favour of upsizing to an FS7 or C300 MKIII and record 4K 10 bit 422 XF/X-AVC internally. Which goes back to my point about getting the better camera in the first place instead of rigging up a smaller camera.

Personally I don't think raw is required for an FS5/C100 type of camera, "most operators" (generalisation!) who own one and for the jobs they shoot would not be happy with the extra investment in a recorder, extra storage and increased post production time.

I'd rather have better quality internal 4K which Canon will probably deliver in the C100 MKIII.

The XC10 is 4K 305mps 422 8 bit, whereas (I believe) the FS5 is 4K 100mps 420 8 bit. It's not likely the C100 MKIII will be less capable than the XC10.

Probably not ... but Northlight (a UK based photo/video site) posted some super bleary photos of what they say might be 5D MKIV. To me, it looked like a possible C100MKIII or something in between. Allegedly, it was spotted on the "America Got talent" promo shot (which is on NBC).

My opinion that having an XC or XF named camera may get Canon out of both the photo and video hot waters. From other gossip, C500 MKII (or C700) and 5D MKIV are a given. That third XC/XF camera may or may not be unveiled in September ... but who knows.

BTW, Matt, I agree with the rest too. FS5 and FS7 seem to have been made for a slightly different market than C100/300 MKI and MKII. Still, there's overlap and someone wouldn't necessarily have to have both cameras for a variety of jobs.

On a second thought, that was probably 5D MKIV after all. That (new) 24-105 is pretty hard to attach to a fixed lens camera.

Oh ok. Yeah you guys have been talking about that but you said something about it being hard to attach like you had personal experience with it. I think it was a joke I misinterpreted. Move along. Nothing to see here.

A few of the still sites have posted stuff about the new 24-105 where beta units have been supposedly spotted being tested. It is Canons bread and butter lens, makes sense to update it. Better IS, less distortion, etc. Hopefully it's better than the current sucky 24-105.

It wasn't a "real" joke. (was it funny? OK, then it was) Off some photos posted online, it looked like it could have been a fixed lens camera, sort of like a step up from XC-10. But then I thought that, since the new 24-105 has been bandied about a while and 5D MKIV is a guarantee, then the MKIV & 24-105 combo was far more likely than a fixed lens model.

Of course, there have been rumors about that fixed lens camcorder model too, something perhaps in the XF line.

There were also hush-hush rumors about me able to deliver a decent punchline. I'd probably have to post something in the "screenwriting" thread to dispel those.
