GH2 Is anyone waiting on the GH3 before making a decision on their next upgrade?

I think everyone should put their good luck clothes on and wear them every day while wishing that "wide dynamic range" means a usable for-realsies twelve (12) stops of DR.

Thanks for your cooperation. Signed,

Dude you smell weird.

By the time the GH3 starts shipping there will be a thread asking "is anyone holding out to see what the __________ has in store..." use the best tool for the job at the moment you need it. Actually better than that, use whatever tool you have access to to actually shoot something.

Yeah, extra DR is the only thing I really wanted on the GH2. It doesn't have to be BMCC levels, but a couple of extra stops to pull in those super bright skies would be very nice. Everything else is icing on the cake (and it look like they have a ton of icing this time around).

I am currently happy with the GH2 and Hack all I really want from the GH3 is a better more professional form factor. I do a lot of handheld work and need a beefier camera

thanks

If the content is compelling enough then it won’t matter if the video isn’t perfect. I know we should always strive for that. However, sometimes it just isn’t possible.
yeah, i wouldnt totally disagree with that. i kind of feel that way about all this blathering on about detail and dr. none of that does you a bit of good if your composition and concept sucks - which is more often the case than not...

but for me, camera makers are ignoring fundamental camera behaviors in favor of buzzwords vs price.

Just got an email from Luke Maslen announcing the Black Magic camera with the 4/3 mount.

The tension mounts. Gh3 or the BMC?

Certainly GH3. I have a feeling a lot of folks don't know what they are getting themselves into with the BMC.

Oh, wow. BMC in m4/3 or GH3?!?!?!?! Tough call.

GH3 = Cheaper, smaller, records to SD cards
BMC = RAW 12-bit 2.5K, ProRes 10-bit 1080p. Mini Alexa.

Damn, I wasn't expecting a BMC with m4/3 mount until sometime next year...

+1 there!

I was curious about the sensor size and looked it up. It's a bit smaller than M4/3. I'd expect it to be a bit larger for everything else they tried to put into this camera.

Right. Plus the RAW workflow is bound to give those that are not used to it a lot of headaches.

IMO those folks should hang on to their "regular" cams and if they can afford it get the BMC along with it. That way they can weigh the pros and cons of both workflows.

Ian-T, glad to see you around from the HV20 days, I would agree that the workflow sets you back big $ (I need a whole new computer for D9 to work! Ten I need batteries, and SSD's up the ying-yang, then storage on my editing machine somewhere around 4 gb worth of space). Never mind the curve of learning a new NLE. I will wait till things calm down, and see the GH3 :) M43 mount is nice though.

Weird at this sounds, I'm probably gonna shoot PRoRes ninety percent of the time, and RAW when I get into "tricky" situations. That means a few shots are RAW, everything else is compressed. What's happening is that the camera is being hailed as "RAW" and so everyone immediately thinks that it's RAW or nothing, but even the 10 422 220Mbit compressed ProRes destroys everything, especially considering you can still take advantage of the DR.

Once they start allowing you to import custom LUTs into the camera so that it's baked into the ProRes, me thinks it'll remove all barriers for the the super newb. People will just share LUTs for both ProRes and RAW (which you can easily drag and drop in Resolve) and never really have to do any major lifting.

I'm still gonna get a GH3 (and eyeballing the prospect of the Sony Full Frame camera). Need a tiny second camera and slow mo options.

Hey my brotha from anotha motha good to see you here as well. It's been a while. As you can see from my avatar I have not managed to get outta my truck as yet...lol :)

Yes you are correct about the hardware considerations. I know disc space these days is cheap but depending on how one shoots I can imagine disc space would come and go quickly. I like what Kholi mentions about the ProRes/RAW workflow. I belive those "tricky" shots he's talking about mainly involves high DR scenes. That's where this camera will shine. The reason why I recommend keeping a "regular" camera around is for those slow motion shots that you would not be able to get with the BMC.

@Kholi..."Custom LUTs"....yes. That would be nice.

The tension mounts. Gh3 or the BMC?
since one of the two doesnt actually exist yet even as a confirmed rumor, and the other only in small pre-ordered quantities... id say for the forseeable future - neither ; )

If I got a BMC I would shoot virtually everything in prores. Prores has been an intermediate/editing format for me for a good while now (converting from AVCHD to prores before manipulating anything) so to shoot straight in prores would be a god send.

Unless I produce a high budget feature or something that is.. in which case I might as well rent an epic/F3/alexa anyway?
