is AI gonna take our jobs?

the irony of it all is the self-driving cars will probably fully happen after the brain chips are well on their way now that the FDA approved them last week

Let's keep in mind that the approval is limited for use in people with debilitating illnesses, and they only get to do it to fewer than 10 people for starters.

Also, I didn't realize the extent of their sloppiness in animal trials

The critical milestone comes as Neuralink faces federal scrutiny following Reuters reports about the company's animal experiments.

Neuralink employees told Reuters last year that the company was rushing and botching surgeries on monkeys, pigs and sheep, resulting in more animal deaths than necessary, as Musk pressured staff to receive FDA approval. The animal experiments produced data intended to support the company's application for human trials, the sources said.

In one instance in 2021, the company implanted 25 out of 60 pigs with the wrong-sized devices. All the pigs were subsequently killed - an error that employees said could have been easily avoided with more preparation.

In May, U.S. lawmakers urged regulators to investigate whether the makeup of a panel overseeing animal testing at Neuralink contributed to botched and rushed experiments after Reuters reported on potential financial conflicts on the panel.

The Department of Transportation is separately probing whether Neuralink illegally transported dangerous pathogens on chips removed from monkey brains without proper containment measures.

Brisbane-based Li-S Energy has developed a 20-layer battery cell utilising semi-solid state lithium sulfur battery technology. The company claims the new cell displays nearly double the gravimetric energy density and a comparable volumetric energy density to lithium-ion cells.

Oh and the Reuters hit-piece on Musk sounds like a complete pile of dung.

Slimy Tim
e Magazine back in 1980 published an article on the comparative living standards in Manhattan and Moscow ... except that very little in Moscow was sold openly. But they didn't notify their readers about that, did they?

Read it in a friendlier outlet if you like

Elon Musk's pressure to rush research, according to reports, leads to botched experiments and an increase in animal deaths"

And the Fox News article on their FDA approval says it's first only for quadriplegics

Ya, it only proves that journalism is the most dishonorable profession on the planet.

BTW, the wretched media spent the last year or so trying to destroy Ellen DeGeneres's reputation solely over her appearance at an NFL game with GW Bush. Fortunately, she'd made enough money to retire. But the media are still evil, wretched dung of human manure.

I'm confused why you think Musk would balk at animal abuse, especially in a field that already does it to a lesser extent anyway. Or at cutting corners, which he does constantly

Neuralink was also denied its first fda application, although I think it was not for these reasons. It was over questions of safety of the procedure, reversability etc

She's done the same thing for over 20 years. The only thing that has changed was her appearance with GW. The rest is a man made destruction campaign.

BTW, I knew her brother Vance a little back in the early 90's and a couple of guys who wrote/co-wrote her standup routine. I wasn't a huge fan but the smearing campaign against her was a typical media hit job that was as bad as what an organized criminal does.

If there's a crime here, it's not that DeGeneres got her comeuppance. It would be that people in good standing with elites don't get theirs. Anyway, it's not like she launched an unprovoked invasion of another country and killed hundreds of thousands of their civilians. Now that would be bad.

A few months ago, a very well known/powerful Russian music producer Iosif Prigozhin (the same last name as Yevgeniy Prigozhin, a Wagner Mercinary head, both happen to be ethnically Jewish by birth, both from Leningrad) was talking to an acquaintance on a phone where he thought he was on a secured connection. And so he decided to opine on the situation in Russia - which ended up as "we got a complete moron as a leader". With the moron obviously being VVP. The point being was that Josif saw the obvious. Not everyone in the US, especially whoever reads the mass media, achieves that similar beillians.

Every US president is a war criminal. How about that? They won't tell you that in the mass media.

"If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged."

I mean, why do you think we refuse to join the ICC even while we call for it to prosecute Putin. Lol!

A few years ago no one wanted autofocus.

I'm sure we'll have driverless cars. I'm sure we'll have neurological implants. I'm sure we won't have either one in the time frame that Musk predicts. That's not even a dig at him. He's a salesman. This is what salesmen do.

To continue your analogy to autofocus, the people who were selling autofocus claimed it was ready for video long before it was. And they still won't admit to its limitations and why manual focus will always have a prominent place in film production.

I mean, literally everyone would love to have a driverless car.

By the way, can I just say that I find it hilarious that the same people who are afraid of vaccines (even those that have been used for decades) are totally on board with connecting a computer directly to their brain

Edit: and then if the government ordered everyone to get one, Republicans would suddenly realize it was a dangerous new technology and Democrats would start touting the safety data from its trials

Not me. That is the last thing I want. I love driving and absolutely hate being a passenger at times when there is no other choice. In the past two months I've driven from Florida to NAB, then did a bunch of national parks in the southwest before driving back to Florida. I was home for a few days and then drove non-stop to Boston in 20 hours. No big deal. It's great to see the country from the ground.

So, there's no chance I will buy a self-driving car -- with one exception. I would love to have an autonomous car that I could have drop me off at the airport and then have it go home and put itself in the garage until I get back. And I'd like a car that I could have drop me off at a corner in Manhattan with my camera, and then let it drive itself around until I was ready to be picked up again a few blocks away. But there's going to be laws about such things or else the streets will be jam packed with everyone else doing the same thing. So in the end, I do not see an autonomous or self-driving car in my future.

I'm skeptical that it will ever a happen anyway. When I stop and think about all the road damage, construction, traffic jams, tire debris, a-hole drivers, heavy rain, darkness, etc. that I passed on my trip from Orlandoto Boston, there's no way an self-driving car is going to negotiate through all that safely and in a timely manner. We barely have AF that works on our cameras -- how can a car drive itself though all that? Ain't gonna happen in my lifetime.

I must have missed that issue of Mother Jones.

I'm not a mother jones reader, but they're really not very radical. Most European countries are further left

Also, Chomsky's point here is not even debatable. It's an objective truth. But as usual, you resort to character attacks rather than debating the substance

It was founded by a radical; but became an irrelevant milquetoast rag around the 911/Iraq war era. I'd bet that'd still make it a more recent development than any of the actual inflated experiences -- barely applicable to the thread -- DLD uses for name drops on here constantly.
