Iron Man 2

Great point! Carrying the villains of IM2 over to 3 would have been a great move, and had it end on a sort of down note.

They TRIED to do that with Pirates 2... a valiant effort, though I still am not a big fan of Pirates 2,3. But they had the right idea... Jack is "dead" like Han Solo in Carbonite, in TESB, and now they have to go rescue him. Really a good way to set it up. (I personally think too many silly subplots hurt the 2nd and 3rd Pirate movies, when they could have been great films).

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Same thoughts on my end with the second and third Matrix films. They had the right idea, a nice ticking clock element (the machines digging to attack Zion), but then they got bogged down in too much other "stuff" if you know what I mean.

Decent popcorn movie. Potentially great, but missed a lot of opportunities that could've pushed it over that threshold.

SPOILERS

Can anyone here help me answer the following questions? Both from the first encounter with whiplash.
1. How did Ivan make it through Favreau's character repeatedly slamming him with the car against a concrete wall?
2. How did Ivan survive Iron Man punching him in the face?

I mean, it's clear Ivan is tough as nails, but man, that was some beating to survive.

Possible SPOILERS!!

I thought it was a chain-link fence, no? They have a lot of give and I can see that without much of an issue.

2. How did Ivan survive Iron Man punching him in the face?

Easy. Iron Man is a hero and he's not going to kill the guy. Call it a weaker suit, and holding back. :)

Possible SPOILERS!!

I was thinking that too, BUT that didn't stop him from killing the terrorists in the first one, and they didn't even have armored suits. They were no match for him.

Don't get me wrong, I can suspend some disbelief, and obviously we wouldn't have a movie if he took out Ivan that early in the game. But still, was anyone else wondering about this?

Maybe I don't understand Ivan's first suit well enough.

That was different, other innocent lives were in direct danger with guns pointed to their heads. That and there was more than one.
If he made a move they would have shot them. At this point (what you're talking about in Iron Man 2) it was really just mano a mano.

Everyone else was now out of the picture.
And it was a chain-link fence, wasn't it? Not a concrete wall.

If you want to bring reality into a superhero movie then a cop would have shot Ivan in the head after he sliced the first car open, but that's no fun now is it? :)

Agree with the consensus. Fun in bits and parts but the whole doesn't really deliver. The film has a typical 2nd act problem where it just feels like filler between the 1st and the 3rd. The plot doesn't develop any serious complications, it's just marking time until the inevitable final conflict.

SPOLIER

The source of the problem is that they took Mickey Rourke's Ivan out of the picture the whole middle hour. First he's imprisoned, then he's kind of held hostage by Justin Hammer while he designs his suit and robots, but he doesn't interact with Tony at all. If they had kept him more in play and at large it would have upped the stakes on Tony in a more immediate way and the film would have been a lot stronger.

I liked it a lot, though I couldn't help thinking how much better it could have been if they had kept Stane for the villain in THIS one instead of the last one. It would have fit the overall plot extremely well.

Do you mean they should have had him survive the first movie? Or that they should have had a different villain entirely in the first one?

Pretty sure he was being rammed into a concrete barrier.

I really liked the first film but feel that this one really suffered from that malaise that often accompanies Part II within any given franchise. I know Stark was dying, but Downey's performance felt really flat. I think the script was crappy and it was reflected in the way he approached the film.

As with light sabers, I really have a hard time believing characters who wield a whiplash device aren't walking around with missing fingers, arms (or worse). If you've ever played around with a bull whip, you know what I mean. That said, the Formula race scene was still the best in the movie.

Okay, maybe the kid who blows away the drone was cool too. The Walt Disney homage scenes with John Slattery were fun - especially the outtakes.

Yes, different villain in the first film. It would have been cool if they had established him as an ally/friend in the first film and then had the betrayal happen in the second one. And as I said, that would have fit the plot of the second film very very well.

Plus, Jeff Bridges was so great in the role, it would have been nice to see more of him.
