iPAD AS MONITOR?

composite is sd, and video out is less intensive than stream in.

you still would need the component to connect to the camera or a device that will stream over wifi, it's not cost effective, why would someone make that device and make the app for the ipad, for like 20 app buyers that won't pay that much for the app nor the device that will stream.

if the canons can send low bitrate, compatible h.264 over wifi, that will still cost a lot for the adapter thing, and won't be hd monitoring. that would be an app only solution considering you will pay for the adapter which costs too much. and still the app would only sell for 20 or less people.

20 people or less?

I think more than 20 people alone on these very forums would buy an Ipad alone if this was possible ( including me ). Never underestimate yourself, DSLRs are very popular right now so is the Ipad. With the right marketing they can sell hand in hand, who knows if it will happen but I strongly disagree with you on thinking that no one will buy it.

There's a much greater likelihood that an Android tablet is released with HDMI in at some point... probably less expensive too!

i'm talking about the app not the ipad, if i'm developing an app i want tens of thousands of buyers to buy something for 0.99cents, i don't see a developer doing a 9.99 or 19.99 app that only 20 to lets say 50 buyers.

It depends on how specialized the use is. If you created an app that let you use the ipad as an external HDMI monitor, you'd get plenty of non-filmmakers wanting to buy it to use it as a monitor alone. There is no hardware accessory that allows input at the moment, so the are barriers to creating this kind of app, unless you try to do something wirelessly, which will probably result in lag.

If you created something specific for filmmakers, you could probably sell it for 9.99 and every serious filmmaker wouldn't blink at that price.

At .99 cents, you'd need 10,000 people to want it. At 9.99, you'd only need 1000. So if only a small but passionate group of people want/need the app, it would make sense to sell it at little higher price.

there are no 1000 people wanting compromised hdmi connection that will cost a lot of money. just the converter from hdmi to h.264 will cost hundreds and then you need o send the signal wireless that's a couple of hundreds more. non filmmakers will not buy something that will cost as much as a low end big screen tv.

Android tablet?

What other companies are looking at the iPad and saying to themselves I want a peice of that market?

I did hear a China company releases an AMD driven iPad ripoff within the week that the iPad was released.

Anyone looked into that? I do know it was cheaper? I wonder if this has the ability to be used as a field monitor?

Oh and anyone seen the 15 inch T-Mobile Vega Android tablet? now that's a touch pad?

Maybe I'm confused -- I think you were suggesting an iPad app -- not me. I don't think it makes sense, I was just trying to support the notion that it is a niche product but viable for filmmakers if you price it higher.

I don't think it makes sense to pursue an iPad solution personally (as I mentioned, there will be other tablets released over the next year with more flexibility than the iPad. It's very likely that at least one of them will double as a display with HDMI in.).

If you are interested in following upcoming tablet news you might check out Engadget.com or Gizmodo. They have been discussing android/chrome, and windows based tablets on a weekly basis.

I have had some people start to look into it, if it can be done right i think it would have to cost more like $149.00 to recoup development cost, it's a small market for something like this.

About everyone I know who works on feature films in LA already has an iPad but still you prob wouldn't sell more than 1,000 in a year or two and that's probably way to high.

I reckon you would sell more than 1,000 in a year. My company would probably buy 2 or 3 right away, and I'm sure we are not alone.

Of course being able to output video is not the same as being able to input video. Clearly some people don't understand this.

Correct, it's a whole different ball game.

Even at $149 or $199 I'd buy it (because I have an iPad) and wouldn't have to spend $500+ for an external monitor so it would save me $300-$350+ and keep my kit small.

Being a small market for it even at 3500 sold it's actually on the very bottom of my development list.

that is freakin awesome!
i'm a little confused by the specs though.....does this thing output audio or not? there's specs for audio, but then at the bottom there's an * stating that there's no audio inputs. it should be able to get audio through the hdmi though.

The audio is input via HDMI and output over ethernet. It doesn't transmit audio via RCA or whatever. So, it streams audio. Pretty cool eh?

There are other wifi adapter/transmitters coming to market that might be better, what you guys are looking for is a hard wired iPad monitor, it's a tough one right now.

720p h.264 high profile is more than what the ipad can playback.

it needs to be a specific flavor and profile to work with the ipad, not mentioning it has to be lower than what the maximum the hardware can do to be able to also receive the wifi connection and do other processes at the same time for the app getting the stream

the ipad has only a usb input, so not really any chance of 'hard wired' solution.
i've seen 720p youtube videos played on an ipad, so i'm pretty sure it can handle it.

I've seen the 720p Streaming from cube to the iPad, it's stunning. The only hitch is that the iPad buffers the video, which gives it about 10 seconds of latency. The Teradek guys are working on an app to circumvent iPad's buffering and reduce the latency.

Guys, surely the most simple solution is if a dev comes up with similar software to Canon's own Digital Photo Professional that comes with the camera that allows you to see a live view through USB on your monitor. This shouldn't be very difficult to create at all, and something Canon may release anyway as more and more people buy into ultra portable tablet PC's. I know a few guys already using small netbooks like a MSI Wind attached to their rigs as a makeshift cheap monitor. I predict this will happen imminently.
