iomega drive for archiving P2?

I am thinking about getting a couple 1Tb iomega drives for archiving my P2 footage. Since my MacBook Pro is about full, I just want a couple drives to offload my P2 footage. They only cost $110 each which seems like a good deal. I am not concerned with connection speed since I will not be working off of these drives, so if the drives only have a USB connection, it is ok with me.

Does anyone have any experience archiving P2 on iomega drives?

I use Seagate and OWC Raid drives for archiving. Even though you don't care about the connection speed, surely you care about having reliable copies of your footage. Don't skimp on drive quality.

Two is one and one is none.

If you only have something backed up in one place, it isn't an archive, it is an accident waiting to happen.

Thanks for all the advice. I especially like the wise proverb, "Two is one and one is none." Is that an Eastern saying?

I ended up by getting the iomega, since $100 got me 1TB. I do plan to get another hard drive to do a mirror backup, the old fashion way. Maybe I will get a seagate.

Any other things I should be concerned with when archiving P2?

What you should be concerned with is the quality of your enclosure and drives, as every one here has indicated.

$100 = 1TB = a candidate for failure. A solid Seagate 1TB drive runs at least $80.00 and a quality enclosure runs about $70.00.

Saving $50.00 for data archival isn't priceless.

Keep the folder structure and lastclip.txt files intact.

I'm surprised at the Seagate recommendation. Every I know who has used them complains that they hardly last at all, and I myself have also had bad experiences with poor Seagate drives.

I have 3 seagate drives, two of which are 6 years old and 1 that is 2 years old. Never a problem. My critical archives are on two OWC Mercury Elite Pro raid drives...also never a problem.
