Introducing the Odyssey7Q+ from Convergent Design

With the new firmware, is there any reason an existing Odyssey shouldn't be able to record 4k from the A7s through an HDMI to SDI converter?

+1

As a GH4 shooter I would choose the Atmos Shogun over the Odyssey 7Q+ if the Shogun can record 10-bit over HDMI.
As pointed out in another thread, the capabilities of the Shogun and the Odyssey7Q+ are similar in this matter. Both units can record 10-bit 4K over SDI and 8-bit UHD over HDMI. If 4K 10-bit over HDMI is in fact possible given this receiver chip that I believe both of us are using, then if one company can offer it the other can as well.

Except the Shogun can do 10b 4K over one 12G SDI and the 7Q+ still requires 4 3G SDI inputs for one 10b 4K connection, right?

This is a bit surreal. I mean, are you saying that if Atmos has 10bit 4k hdmi, q7+ will too, but who knows? The ghost in the machine?

The current release requires 4x SDI connections, but the upcoming firmware will also allow 4K video over 2x SDI connections. Cameras this 4K video dual-stream connectivity will work with include the F55 (and upgraded F5), the GH4 with YAGH base, and the Phantom Flex4K.

While the Shogun does have a single SDI input with a listed spec of 12G, there currently is only a single camera outputting such a signal, and it can record 4K ProRes internally. All other cameras outputting 4K over SDI do so with either two or four cables. Also note that there is currently no SDI cable in existence that is rated to carry 12G. Companies such as Belden say that they are not going to ever attempt to develop it, as it is questionable if it would work over any functional distance and they expect clients would rather use fiber connections instead for such signals.

Sorry if that one came out unclear.

The official technical spec for HDMI 1.4a or 1.4b states a maximum data threshold of 4K 4:2:2 8-bit. Both the Odyssey7Q+ and the Shogun (according to Atoms published spec) use this HDMI connectivity, so therefore we should both be limited by it. If there is some way that someone has managed to squeeze something beyond this spec out of this level of HDMI connectivity, then we should be able to as well. But I sincerely doubt that this has happened or will happen. Specs exist for a reason.

Again for clarity, here's what the Atoms website spec page says about the video inputs (you can look it up yourself):

----
Video input/loop out
HDMI 1 x HDMI (1.4b)
SDI 1 x 4K-SDI 12G/6G or HD-SDI 3G/1.5G (SMPTE)
Signal Uncompressed 10/8bit 4:2:2 (camera dependent)
----

I think some people have been confused by this, but you can also look up the technical spec of HDMI 1.4b yourself. It can only handle 4K at 8-bit. The "Signal" spec above refers to both HDMI and SDI, or at least that's the way I read it. So in that regard, the capabilities of the Odyssey7Q+ and the Shogun match, in that we both can capture 4K 10-bit over SDI and both capture 4K 8-bit over HDMI. However as noted elsewhere we do handle our SDI connectivity differently.

Mitch, I never did see a response to this....Can you confirm?

The post said "All firmware updates will apply to each device as applicable" I'm not sure what that means.... 1 firmware download will install on all 3 versions of the Odyssey or will each unit version will have it's own firmware file?
If it is just 1 file for all 3 versions and....

With the 7Q+ shipping in quantity within 2 weeks, that is capable of "as well as HD/2K/UHD/4K video recording in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), "

Does that mean just plain 7Q owners will be getting a firmware update in the next 2 weeks that will allow 4k prores at 24 (or 30 ) FPS?

This is very confusing. Atomos said today that the Shogun HDMI in is 10bit. Unless they are putting HDMI 2.0 in the Shogun now?

After watching this I dont know what to believe.

When you download the firmware update folder, it contains subfiles for each model -- Odyssey7, Odyssey7Q and now Odyssey7Q+. This is of course invisible to you because you just load the entire update folder onto your SSD. The Odyssey devices themselves know which one to use.

There will shortly be an Odyssey Firmware Update. It will be an update for all three Odyssey models. The Release Notes will indicate what functions are for certain models. Basically they all do the same unless it is a capability beyond that model, such as recording 4K on an Odyssey7 (an HD only device).

The Odyssey7Q already has the capability to record 4K ProRes via SDI input. That capability will be expanded in the new update.

Please tell me if this answers your questions. We will have details of the update with the release.

That answers my questions except I'm currently using ver 3.10.100 firmware (is there a newer ver?) I only have the option to go from 4k raw to UHD prores, I don't see a 4K option in the menu. (FS700 and SDI to 7Q)
(Your post specifically said "as well as HD/2K/UHD/4K video recording in Apple ProRes 422 " so I'm assuming you're not referring to UHD as being 4K )

We are talking about two different things.

The Odyssey7Q with the current firmware can record ProRes in HD, 2K, UHD or 4K directly from a video source of that resolution. For example, one can send 4096x2160 video from an F55 into the Odyssey7Q and capture it in 4K ProRes. When converting from 4K RAW on the FS700, the current firmware supports converting it to video in either UHD or HD and recording that in ProRes. So two very different things.

That said, the new firmware that will debut when the Odyssey7Q+ ships will expand upon these capabilities. And just to reiterate, it will expand upon these capabilities on both the Odyssey7Q and the Odyssey7Q+. There are other functions that are debuting that will also effect the Odyssey7.

Odyssey7q+ 10-bit hdmi support

Odyssey7q+ 10-bit hdmi support

Our engineers have determined that the Odyssey7Q+ HDMI input will in fact fully support 10-bit video in all accepted resolutions. The support for this functionality will be included in the units shipping in the next few days. The camera needs to send it out such a signal of course. Cameras capable of sending 4K 10-bit video over HDMI include the Panasonic GH4 and the Sony FS7.
