GH2 Introducing 'SANITY' - the Do-It-All patch for GH2

Yes, Ralph has the capability of comparing to uncompressed HDMI out. He has been very helpful in showing the differences between hack settings.

ADDITIONAL NOTE:

After additional testing, I would like to add that SANITY works fine with 1080 50i if you use FH/H mode. I set FH/H to 32M, but you could set it higher if you want. In fact, with a Sandisk 16GB 30M card, I successfully had 1080 50i working at 38M (and in ETC mode, no less).

Also, feel free to adjust the bitrate of FH/H to suit slower SD cards (although I doubt you'll need to go below 32M). The image quality holds up remarkably well.

It makes sense to have a lower bitrate with longer GOP. I don't believe low GOP goes well with low bitrate.

But what doesn't make sense is a longer GOP than stock. Why wouldn't you just use the stock GOP with a higher bit rate? The I,P, and B frames get messed up and clipped if you vary from the stock GOP. That is unless you use GOP=1. Then you only have I frames and if you set the bit rate high enough it will have min compression.

I'm just not exactly what this patch is supposed to replace when we already have tons of solid hacks out there with quality and reliability. Maybe someone can clear this up?

Read the first post of this thread to see if it answers your question

It's a good 'all-arounder' is what it is. Not perfect, but if you're going to head out with limited cards, one body, etc, this might be your best choice.

That's just it, it doesn't. I appreciate your 'help' though. There are a few hacks out there with bit rates between the 40-70 range that span and are very reliable with lower GOP settings. I assume, for the most part, GH2 on average are narrative filmmakers as this is not the best tool for documentary. With that assumption, i will also assume that people want to best possible motion rendering for the camera which is what is created with a low GOP.

The only thing i don't recall is if those other hacks are good on 60p.

Why don't you just try it and see for yourself what it does. A picture is worth a thousand words.*:)

The name itself pretty much implies its intention.

I can see this as a good setting for long high quality events where SD card space is of concern.

sanity v3.1
not a good test, i just wanted to test the color settings.
in there standard settings 0.0.0.0

it was a very cloudy day, and some very fine rain was falling. (in the shots with the stronger standard color setting you wil see it)
almost all shots where done behind a fence with gauze (dont no if i spel that wright?)
Also the iso is between 600 and 1250, and shutter never below 1/300 (just to see later the effect in twixtor).

Lens is a Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm 1:4-5.6
Almost all shots are done in 150mm and some with tele2 (300mm)

i must do this again when there is a lot of sunlight.
things will look proberly mutch better

ps.
last shot with twixtor, but i did not set the framerate wright in twixtor :Drogar-Sick(DBG):

That is exactly my question. Driftwood's 'spanmy' patch is beautiful and reasonable. 60p (highest quality setting) is what I'm interested in. If this patch does it, please specify what setting is the highest as well as details.

SANITY has extremely high quality 720 60P. That was one of my goals. At the risk of repeating myself, my main concern was to minimize mud, and SANITY succeeds in doing this. As for settings, use SH mode for normal 720 60P. However, if you shoot ETC, and you might get a write error. (720 60P in ETC mode is very demanding). If this happens, then you should use H mode.

Ralph I am about to test out your patch, but let me tell you my intent...

Tomorrow I am doing a bit of a documentary, should be fun. I have five 16gb sandisk cards... Two of them are class 6 with 20MB/s. One is class 6 with 30MB/s... Two of them are class 10 with 30MB/s.

What I am looking for is a reasonable patch that will be better than stock, yet work with all 5 cards. HOWEVER, I do have two GH2s, one hacked, one not hacked... Just incase something breaks, always nice to have a rock-steady backup.

Does the 720/60p in your patch compare favorably against STOCK 1080/24p?

Will be testing things out today but would appreciate your feedback on here or via PM.

Tested Sanity for a little bit. Seems like a very reasonable patch. Only one problem... 720/60p seems to ALWAYS go into automatic settings no matter what I do. Any suggestions for getting it all manual same as 1080/24p?

Not sure what you mean - automatic settings? This is a new one on me. Is the dial on the top right of the camera set to movie mode? If it is, manual settings should be available.

Regarding your class 6 cards: Try shooting 720 60P in H mode. I can't guarantee it'll work, but there's a good chance it might.

i was told to stay under the 100m patches since i have a 13' mbp with 2.3ghz c2d,
4gb ram.
