Insurance For Hvx200a

Any information about insurance for hvx200a? I'd like one that would cover, damage and theft. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gabriel

I use "State Farm" to insure all of my equipment: HVX, MacBook Pro, Tripod etc. It is covered under my renters insurance if anything happens to it at home such as theft or fire. But it does not cover anything happening to my stuff outside my place. So I got a personal articles policy which covers for pretty much everything from accidental damage (AKA me accidentally dropping my stuff into a river) to mysterious loss. It cost around $10-$15 per thousand covered and there is no deductible. Other insurance companies can do similar things but I found that "State Farm" was the most helpful, knowledgeable, and economical of the companies I researched.

No 10-15 dollars per thousand per YEAR!!! But as far as I know it is for personal use only so the equipment cannot be owned by a company. So for me I just payed a little over $200 dollars for coverage of all of my equipment until June of 2009!

Wow man that's nice. Admittedly I have never dealt with insurance so that's a big surprise for me.

At that rate I'm gonna have to call and see about that. Thanks Filmbuff.

I insured mine through my State Farm agency that carries my car and renter's policy. I just had them create a special policy for the camera (I think it's called a "floater" policy) and it covers the camera anywhere for all types of use including independent filmmaking and it costs about $100/ yr. The only thing it won't cover is Paparazzi-type use, so I guess if Julia Robert's bodyguard throws my HVX down on the pavement I'm on my own. But I have no intent of using it that way.

Just make sure you claim what you are actually using it for or you may not be covered.

I looked for commercial protection through a cheap group plan for videographers and they rejected me because my work was too 'professional'.

Now I have insurance with the Hartford and includes liability and damage (but is over to $1200 a year)

Well living in FLORIDA, I can tell you it doesn't work that way. State Farm, who has insured every vehicle I've ever driven will not Insure my camera. Neither will any other car/homeowners ins. company because you cannot live within 10 miles of a body of water. It's crazy here. Now if I have a commercial building withing which my business operates and my equipment resides, then yes I can get insurance.

We're with Safeco. I have had a miserable time trying to get a "personal articles" rider.

Remember as well that if you show these items as a business, then some insurance companies treat everything different and more expensively.

my insurance (Allstate) said they would cover my camera (theft, damage, etc) but if anything happened to it while outside of my home then it's on me.

if any of you have your own LLC there are forms of business insurance that you can put the camera under.

My camera is covered under a personal articles policy and is completely separate from my car and renter's insurance. It is the same type of policy that insures my fiance's ring in case she loses it or it is stolen away from the house or car. I'm sure there is variance from state to state but the personal articles policy covers all of my gear which is all listed in the policy from all the majors like theft, loss, or accidental damage. Ask your state farm reps about their "personal articles policies" and see if they can do it then. Now this is NOT business insurance, which means that I cannot rent my stuff or make money directly from my equipment and expect to be covered if anything happens to my stuff during that time. Hope you can get your stuff covered if you haven't already.

I use Hill and Usher.
I paid 550 for 20k worth of gear.
If anything ever happens to my gear, anywhere, anyway, I am covered. Theft, flood, drop it, it just stops working for no reason.
Repacement cost too.

$500.00 deductible tho.

I had my SDX900, lens and tripod covered under Met Life Home as a personal property addition to my homeowners policy. It cost $590/year to cover the camera for $26k and the lens for $12k.

When I set up the addition to our plan, I asked them whether the equipment would be covered in foreign countries (I was planning to shoot in the UAE, Canada and Australia), and they said that it would be fully covered, anywhere in the world, for any reason, and would not increase my premium for the house should I make a claim. I believe it was called "Scheduled Personal Property".

I guess if you work out the cost/thousand, that was $64/thousand of insurance per year. Not great, but I haven't had to worry. That said, this thread reminds me that I need to add my HVX and other gear to the policy.

Anybody in Canada have any insurance advice? I need to get some for all my stuff asap as I regularly film in some pretty shady areas and wouldn't mind paying for it just for peace of mind. Cheers.

At the end of the day it is good to know it's there, but the key is not to take advantage. I use to use www.safeware.com to cover my laptop.

They covered my 20D when it was stolen and covered my Powerbook when it was out of warranty and needed repair. They work, but after they paid for the 20D and a few laptop repairs they canceled my policy due to too many incidents happening around the same time.
