Input HD recording through component cables?

Can you record HD signals into the HVX through the component connection like you can with S-video for SD?

Hm,
so the best thing that could happen for HVX/HPX users would be, when broadcasters/posthouses/agencys will say this:
"We accept the following delivery formats: Digital Betacam tape, HDCam tape and P2 storage cards"
Now 16Gb P2 card prices only have to come down to tape costs...

What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to record an edited program back to P2?

This is what I WANTED to do:
I'm planning a mockumentary film project and we're trying to work out the camera we want to use. I love the image that the Canon XH A1 produces: It's so crystal clear and the noise level is very low and pleasing to the eye. However, I hate what HDV compression does to the image in high-activity scenes.
The solution I HAD in mind is to bypass HDV compression altogether by sending the A1 image out through the component cables while recording into another camera's component input like the HVX and record in dvcproHD 1080.

Apparently this won't happen though. It really would have solved my problems.

Look at the price of the cheapest DVCProHD deck.

That will surprise you.

These prices are pretty current:

The AJ-HD1700 Studio VTR for $62,500, and

The AJ-HD1200A Compact VTR for $21,000.

Source: Link to Panasonic DVCPRO HD VTR page (http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webap...toreId=11201&catalogId=13051&catGroupId=14595).

That does surprise me. Why hasn't someone built a cheap portable deck? It's basically a camera minus the CCDs and lens: shouldn't a deck be possible to build for a fraction of camera cost?

That won't work, no. You could go into a deck, but that'll be $25,000.

You could try a Wafian Hard Disk recorder, but I think those are still five digits...

A DVCPRO-HD "deck" is coming, the P2 Gear. Yes, it's a fraction of the camera cost, but that fraction is about 2/3. It's $4,000. However, it also doesn't do component in, it has outputs for component and HD-SDI but only firewire in.

What can you do with firewire in? I can't think of any camera that puts anything through firewire except for pre-compressed video. Am I missing something?

You're missing nothing. The firewire in would allow you to dub back from the computer or do live recording from a camera that outputs a compatible signal. But no, it won't cross the bridge from HDV to DVCPRO-HD.

Aww...

Or more useful, uncompressed to DVCpro-HD.

maybe someday.

Well it would seem your only choice at present would be to either:
A) Rent a DVCPro HD deck and use the canon camera tethered to it. (I believe that is what canon did for their watchmaker demo for the XLH1.
B) Have the camera tethered to a computer and record in the DVCPro HD codec in FCP.
