C300: Initial Thoughts

What is your opinion of the 70-200 F2.8 IS II for event shooting with the C100? I shot an event friday night with the 24-105 F4 and it worked well but I am in the market for a 70-200. Undecided between the F4 IS (much lighter in weight and on wallet) or the F2.8 IS. I'm leaning towards the F4 as it would be easier for handheld/monopod and the C100 should be able to handle the lower light, or do you think the F2.8 is significantly better?

Well the bigger difference is likely between the F2.8 I IS and F2.8 II IS where the glass is of a little higher quality. You can see comparisons online that are telling. If I was going to get a lens of this size/quality I wanted the best I could get my hands on. It's doubtful you'll use F2.8 much, because of the obvious focus difficulties so you gotta wonder if the lenses speed matters a ton for what you're doing. The C100 can handle the ISO's on the high end well enough for you to stop down a little anyways.

I think it just comes down to whether or not you want a great lens or a really great lens and whether or not you need a faster one in some situations. Doesn't sound like you do, otherwise you'd know your answer already. Go for the 70-200 F4 I guess?

With all these new cameras that have great light sensitivity, the conversation becomes less about "Do I need the extra stop of light on the lens" as much as "How do I want this shot to look aesthetically?" It's great when you don't have to shoot wide open!

F4 on the 2.8 II IS will look better/sharper than F4 on the F4 (where the sweet spot is around 5.6).

I guess I'm OK with light sensitivity with the C100, and quality (for what I do), my main concern is really the weight ... and that I could buy say a 70-200 f4L + 100 f2.8L macro for the price of a 70-200 f2.8L.

been loving my c100 so far. and the thing with the noise iso is, use it to get a proper exposure and don't under expose and compensate in post. the grain even at 12800 as long as its properly exposed is fantastic

I've found the reds/browns are the noisiest parts of the image on the C300 regardless of ISO or exposure. Not really surprising.
