Informal poll: How do you calibrate your external monitor?

The only truly accurate was is with blue-only and bars. I don't know of any DSLRs that output bars. So your first step is to hook it up to something that does.

People will tell you to calibrate at the start of your shoot and even mid-day; but this may be impossible at a DSLR shoot. I find my little Marshall holds calibration quite well, and "everything at the 50% point" is usually very close.

You can get a blackmagic card for under $200 and calibrate from your NLE - and then you get a bonus grading monitor; my 5" Marshall is hooked up to my Mac when I'm not shooting.

The one positive about DSLRs & monitors is you can push the footage around a lot in post. Highlight detail is usually your biggest concern (followed by plugged up shadows), and the histogram will tell you exactly what's going on in those departments. I'm less concerned with monitor accuracy shooting DSLR vs. something like an HMC150.

If DSLR's don't generally put out bars, can you put a movie file of bars on a card and play it back to calibrate your monitor?
