Indiefocus vs DFocus follow focus systems?

The real comparison is between the D-Focus and the Indifocus 20 not the pro, as they both have exposed gears, etc.

The indifocus20 looks a bit better to me, and comes with all the stuff you need @ no extra cost.

In any case all these budget follow focuses are kind of bothering me a bit, and pushing me more towards being tempted by doing some kind of DIY setup.

...disregarding the fact that the DFocus doesn't support speedcranks and whips at this time?http://designbydave.net/dfocus/dfocus.html

Just wanted to chime in to let you know that the D|Focus does now include the Arri standard accessory port as a standard feature.

Sorry I haven't gotten the web site updated yet. Working on a complete site redesign and its taking longer that I expected.

Does the Indofocus 20 support the GH-1? The website says: "The indiFOCUS20 is a full featured follow focus designed specifically for users of the Canon HV series cameras."

I'm currently doing a shoot this weekend and testing out the indiRailspro MP which uses the indiFOCUS20- It does work very well with the GH1. I haven't been using the stock lens on it just Canon FD lenses. Will share results later in the week.

Last week I received my dFocus. For $100, it looks and feels great. I also received gears, not those flex gears, from a guy over in hv20.com. And I also got a rod support off ebay at $99.

Gears I bought. He has a couple more available now.

Below is the link for Rod support I bought. He did not include shoulder support when I won the auction at $99.

Total cost: $330 including all shipping charges.

Once I receive it and put them all together, I will write up a quick review.

Looking forward to it :)

Hey guys,

Exhausted from an all weekend shoot, but just wanted to mention that so far the indiRAILSpro MP is a nice match with the GH1 and really fun to shoot with. It's a great stabilizer and with the indiFOCUS20 on the unit, it's really nice to be able to use the GH1 with manual lenses with out a whole base and rails system.

I used Canon FD lenses on the MP and then had a modified MP rig with a Chrosziel follow focus that I mounted to the bracket of the MP and placed it on my tripod as a second rig (I'll show pics of this soon).

I could not test the indiFOCUS gears however because they kept slipping off my lenses. So far the gears didn't work too well for me. Tim Ovel has a little grip solution that's supposed to do the trick to hold it firm so well see if that helps any.

So instead, I used my Zacuto zipgears on my Canon FD's which really worked wonderfully with no slippage issues on my Chrosziel and just a couple instances where the indiFOCUS 20 follow focus slipped but that may have been more to do with how the GH1 starts to incrementally move from side to side on the Giottos MH-652/642 quick release plate which is part of the MP. I'll try to talk to Tim about this.

I would have to really do some further testing on the indiFOCUS 20 to make some strong conclusions but my initial impressions are, aside from the big size of the unit, it worked very well with only minor slippage, something I'm willing to forgive in situations that do not require critical rack focus. You can't beat the price on the unit that's for sure and with the MP it's a great combo for mobility and stability. Plus, since it's an in expensive combo I can knock it around and not have to be so ginger about it where as with my Chrosziel I don't want to scratch the damn thing since I paid so much for it.

I'm backlogged with a few editing projects this week but will post more findings perhaps this weekend.
