SHORT: Incoherent

Hi everyone! I am new on the forums, although I have been reading them now and again as a guest for a couple of years now. I'd like to get more involved around here so I thought I'd start off by sharing my latest short film: Incoherent. A short Psychological thriller neo-noir.

Web - L2.jpg Web P2 - L2.jpg

It's currently doing the rounds at film festivals (mostly in the states).

Shot it on a Canon 550D (with Magic Lantern for about half of the shoot - came out while we were shooting). Only used 3 lenses: Canon 50mm F1.4, Tamron Adaptal II 28mm F2.5, Stock Lens. Sound was on a Juicedlink DT454 with a Shure PG81. We never had much of a budget so the cast and crew were all volunteers. I also used a lot of DIY equipment - like my own camera rig, stedicam and my trusty DIY dolly.

Here's some bonus content:

TEASER TRAILER:

A SHORT MAKING OF:

Story wise it's rather dynamic, non-linear as such and not in anyway commercial. That's why I'm trying to get out to the festivals where the kind of audience that enjoys such types of film would be.

So festival selections:
- Albuquerque Film Festival 2011
- Louisville's International Festival of Film 2011
- Dixie Film Festival 2011
- Bootleg Film Festival

Thanks.
Kyle

Excellent. Won't be for the ADD addled low IQ crowd, but that's alright.

Thanks a bunch!

Yeah, it was risk I knew I was taking. There is often mixed reactions to the film: Those that are confused and those that praise it a lot! At least, I hope, it finds a home at the festivals.

it looks good.

Sound-technicaly you have that "reverb-sounding-room-isue" because of the room. But I think that can be "fixed" more or less...
If you have the original dialogue track I'd like to try, just for fun

Yeah. I'm no sound guy but as far as I know one couldn't fix that kind of thing in post (at least that's what I've read). Unfortunately we couldn't re-shoot the scene and we didn't have any blankets and such to soften it a bit. A fail really. But give it shot, if you get it right then please let me know what process you went through. That kind of knowledge will always be usable. This is the original (no compression done on this copy, just a slight bit of noise reduction): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/62190756/Scene 11 Audio.flac.

I wasn't really happy with the sound in that scene. Much to be desired...

I've tried something... You'll still hear the "reverb of the room". But I cutted out some of the low parts and boosted a bit in the mid/high, and then lower some in the high
to make it more "understandable"

Then some multibandcompression to lower the low rumble and boost the mid/high (where the voice is) a bit, mut not much.

Enjoyed the short and Making of.
Don't down-sell yourself about using DIY and volunteers.
Rather up-sell your film achieving what it did.
Good job! Look forward to seeing more from you guys.

Yeah, definite improvement. Unfortunately I won't be able to really use this in the film since it's already out there but it's good to know that it's possible to at least improve on location sound that's suffering from this issue. Thanks for listing your steps, I'll be sure to keep them in mind.

Thanks! Yeah, a while back I started mentioning it my festival submission cover letters. I know that many shorts this length have budgets of up to $50 000, and we hardly hit $1000. So to many people $50 000 almost always looks better than $1000, until you mention how much you shot it for and what you shot it with. Then people start listening up.

I'm currently working on the second draft of a feature length noir screenplay dealing with a similar topic to this short. I'm not sure when I'll be able to shoot it (if ever), but hopefully it'll be slightly less DIY :D.
