Inception

Everts, Would you believe me if I told you that I'm thinking of going a forth time and bringing my zoom h4n in order to record the audio so that I can dissect the crap out of what's being said.

Read this and tell me if I'm on to something here....
Ok. ask yourself this, Why can't Cobb see the children's faces? His Children, his true desire, I want to get back to my children. "You know I want this more than anything".
This is a huge part of the story and its what pulls it together for me. This is truly the obligatory scene of the movie, does he get back home to his children and see their faces. Why can't he see their faces, why did Chris Nolan use this... because as in all great hero stories the hero must return home. But the faces, why couldn't he see their faces, Because He could No Longer Imagine. As stated in the very beginning of the movie.

I believe you.... !

Here's one of my takes...I don't see anybody as the hero in the movie....Cob I believe in real life is a bonafied Ahole. Worked for the military then went freelance .
The wife had to be evil:) to come up with such a brilliant plan to blame her death on Cob...
just one of my takes.

I dont see why we need to get emotionally connected to the characters....this is not Blood Diamonds. But I do feel very connected to the story !
I believe that the movie is slightly edited like Bourne ultimatum .We just jump right into see an extractor in action then we go for an inception.
Yes this movie is fast ... faster than an MTV generation video.
But I like it as an editor. Really would like to hear more from the editor Emma ..... ?

The most answers are in the first thirty minutes..so much happens it was hard to follow.

His dead wife is his greatest creation a creation kept alive in his dreams by his guilt, love, etc, etc.

googled for the editor name and came up with this ! :)
In the end Cobb says :

I wish. I wish more than anything. But I can't imagine you with all your complexity, all you perfection, all your imperfection. Look at you. You are just a shade of my real life. You're the best I can do; but I'm sorry, you are just not good enough.

Feels like he is still creating ! Or interpret as you will.
Cobs told the Noob architect not to build from memories .
Mal in any level or Limbo is a creation spawned out of memory ...but I could be totally wrong when we hear the director's commentary on the dvd being released in 2021 :)

Ha ha...yes....I agree. What kind of shiznit was that?? She planned that whole thing through to a tee which left him almost no choice...

And there it is...this is the reason why he couldn't see his kids faces. It was his guilt....the very same guilt that created Mal. You noticed once she was gone that's when he could see their faces (if at all that was a dream/limbo he ended up in).

Finally got to see it a 2nd time. I've read a lot of message boards and went in the 2nd time with so many different perspectives. It's amazing how many different theories people are imagining with this movie. I think it's great. I went in the 2nd time looking for many things, but the most important thing I went in there to find was the true ending... Spoilers below...

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!

The first time I saw it I wasn't quite sure if the ending was a dream or not, I was kinda like in the middle, maybe it's a dream maybe its not. Then I started reading some theories of people saying the entire movie was a dream... so from seeing it the 2nd time my conclusion is that, HE IS NOT DREAMING at the end.

I looked for many clues to come up with that conclusion and some were provided on this board. I payed close attention to the kids shoes. In all his dream sequences the kids shoes are black, but at the end when he finally sees them the shoes are a different color, even though everything else about the kids was identical. Another clue I got that the ending was real was the wedding ring. In all the dream sequences he always has the wedding ring on except for when he is in reality(Not counting before his wife died). And at the end I looked at the hands carefully and there was no wedding ring, thus justifying he was not dreaming.

And the biggest mystery of course is the totem, does it stop or not at the end? Well honestly we will never know, but those two little but big clues I mentioned above are enough for me to come to the conclusion that he is not dreaming at the end. It's kind of like what many have mentioned, Cob at the end doesn't care if the Totem stops or not, this is the same way I came to my conclusion from the clues of the wedding ring and kids, seeing those two things, I too didn't care if the totem stops or not cause I too accepted the reality that its not a dream. And a big observation I made which I saw others mention is that, the spinning top Totem is not Cob's, it's his wife's, so because it's not really his I think it wouldn't work properly, as explained by him never having anyone touch your Totem. Cob never really had a Totem in the movie(but that's opening a whole other can of worms lol)

...But there could be many arguments made that it's still a dream at the end from others which I can understand from some other hints I got, but ultimately each individual has to come to it's own understanding and conclusion of the ending which what makes this brilliant, no one shares the exact same experience watching this film. Frankly I hope Nolan don't ever reveal anything through commentaries or any other ways justifying the ending, it makes it that much special.

END OF SPOILER!!!!

Seeing it the 2nd time, the snow sequence didn't bother me as much, it seems shorter for some reason. The only thing I sure wish there was more of is more screen time with Cob and his wife, even though that was story B, I loved it so much, I was much more interested in the story of him and his wife, but that's because I'm a sucka for a good love story and I think if they developed the love story more this movie would of been almost flawless(my opinion of course).

I'm glad I saw it a 2nd time, I've accepted my ending as Cob accepted his. LOL

The scariest thing in this movie was the screen time with his wife. B for basement.
The french actress did a good job portraying a mad woman in a man's dream...

There is an interview of her with a few other cast members on youtube....she was very terrifying goin on about dreams just like in the movie it self ,lol.

Ooh that French accent !

So about the kids shoes being a different color-- that reminds me of a quote from memento. Something to the effect of "memories are unreliable, they can change the color of a car". If it was a dream, maybe he just remembered it slightly differently. But thats a different movie. Just trying to add even more confusion

The reason you shouldn't let anyone touch your totem is so they can't properly recreate it in a dream they design, right?

Like Saito's rug. In life it's wool, but in the dream it was polyester or something.

So the totem is only usefull to see if someone has put you under with the intent of extracting information. If they haven't touched it, they don't know for sure how it feels so they can't recreate it properly.
If it's your own dream, it doesn't matter.
Right?

I have to disagree with you on this statement. "The film specifically states"... Where in the movie does it specificaly state? Dialoge, subtext, where?

I don't want this to come accross the wrong way however,
I don't know where in the movie anything was led to believe or stated that it was too dangerous for Cobb to create dreams? ( Some one please give me a specific senario, statement, subtext, dialoge).

I've seen it three times and going four and five this week with friends.

Cobb can create, or did you miss the fact that the first time Ariadne experiences a dream it's one that Cobb built?????

He specifically says, several times, that it's too dangerous, not that he can't.

Yep. I mean how can you miss when she is in his dream when he is already hooked up and she connects to it without his permission. When she heads on the elevator to try and see what he is hiding. It's pretty straightforward.

Exactly. The entire sequence with Mol in the basement etc. is his dream, created by him. He can create just fine, and rather emaculately as Ariadne comments in the movie.. It's simply just too dangerous.

See the Train in the City.

.

It looks like this movie was 90% shot on medium to tele lens .Most shots look like 35-50mm.
There wides but very view.
This is such a great movie, camera work , acting, editing, directing, art direction were all in place..... Heck maybe even catering :)

!

Please remember that this is 65mm and 35mm Anamorphic. I haven't looked for the info yet but I'm willing to wager most of this is shot on 18s or so. I need to check.

I love this film!

Pretty awesome. I love love loved Arthur's fight scene in the hotel hall way!

And it's pretty clear to me that the entire film is NOT a dream. The ending is he gets back to his kids. He doesn't want to be in a dream, hence why he tells Mal she is merely a shade and not the real thing.

If you want to believe the film is about a very tragic guy that gets further and further away from reality and accepts a lie then fair enough - but that's not what the film is about. Sure there's a few red herrings at the start, when he's talking to Mal as he tries to steal info from Watanabe, the surreal nature he travels around Europe and south america etc, but that's just there to titalise you.

Wonderful filmmaking on every level.

Also, for those who aren't regular eads of American Cinematographer, here's the Inception article again: http://www.theasc.com/ac_magazine/July2010/Inception/page1.php#
