.... In The Night

Okay, when the guy turned to the monster was really horrific and scary. That was coooool. I liked the premise of the hole in his head, but when he moved, I don't know, something about it wasn't right. The opening scene was very good and great sound effects when the guy shot himself. You definately seem like a horror flick kinda' guy.

Glad you liked our monster morphing effect:thumbsup:
You are not alone in the Hole in the head scene and while alot of people thought it was the best effect in the film, there are probably as many of you that thought it could use a little more work FYI that shot took me probably 7 combined hours of experintation and work to get to whare it is at present. i actually think it is pretty effective, but I would also have liked to fill in the gore inside his head also. I am planning to redo that composite at the request of those who did not like it which will probably take me 3 or 4 hours more (you guys are killing me) I will post it when it is completed!
The sound Effect for the suicide had 25 layers I believe if you listen carefully you can hear the depth of the shot and it's damage!
I am definitley a horror flick kinda guy, given the choice between a great drama and a good horror flick, I will take the Horror flick everytime.
I appreciate all the kind words, leenewton! Glad we were able to give everyone a suspense filled, creepy, horror flick! A couple days before Halloween I came up with the Idea for next years Horror flick, and if we are able to do it to my expectations it's gonna be badass!

Thanks,

~Kory

Nice work, dude! A good sustained level of suspense throughout, not an easy thing to pull off. That pregnant gal sure likes her wine! haha - didn't bother me tho, people make bad choices in horror movies all the time, and they usually DIE! LOL.

During the phone conversation, the acting was good, but the fact you stayed wide throughout felt awkward. Gotta shoot more coverage! Cut ins, cutaways, something to vary it up a bit.

The VFX were cool. The transformation was very good - feature film quality. The hole in the head shot, was a good idea, but I think you needed more time to get it right. Good start though. Was that Shake? I bought Shake also, but haven't opened the box yet. I'm gonna buy one those training dvd's first - it's amazing what that program can do!

Overall, good job. Look forward to your next film.

Good work dude.

What was awesome about this....
The best thing for me was the overall grading and look/feel that you gave the film. I think you were spot on here, the film had a very 'Grudge' 'Ring' feel which I really like. The film was well shot and nicely lit. The morph was also very well done indeed, really nice, very creepy and stylish.

What would I change?
The main thing which I struggled with was the acting, I just couldnt buy into the conversation they were having at all, and unfortunately it was a bit too easy to spot the exposition you had put into the script here.

But on the whole you did some really great things here - look forward to seeing your next piece!!

Ain't that the truth:thumbsup:

Yeah, I had a hard time getting time with Julie for her shots, Given the time I could have made it alot better.

I'm glad you liked my VFX shots, I used Shake for all of 'em! I bought the Gnomon dvd's for Shake but didn't learn all that much from them. Most of the stuff I learned in Shake I learned from tutorial books like the one that comes with shake, Encyclopedia of visual effects is another great book, there is also alot of really cool tutorials you can find online. I wish Dvxuser had a section for Shake (if any mods are listening)

Overall, good job. Look forward to your next film.

Thanks Maximus, I really want to see a version of your film without all the strobing I loved the look and intensity of it. Please Fix IT! Then let me know:beer: I'm looking forward to my next film also, and yours! Keep it up man and learn shake, It's limitless what you can do with it!

movie stunts, i really dug your short. the ending with the guys face changing to hollowed out sockets was, dare i say it, iconic. i know we had seen images of it previously but it played like hell in the final piece. really nice work man.

Thanks, it's funny we were actaully going for a reverse Ring/ Grudge type of story from an American point of view, glad It came off right! The morph was very fun to do I have done different morphs in the past, but this is one of my favorites.

Hopefully, next time I can get some better actresses, on the plus side they worked for free and were comfortable with the camera. I have something in mind for the next horror / hallows fest that should really be something special. Course that could all change and become better when it actually comes around.
Thanks for the interest and comments, they are very much appreciated! Keep making great movies!

REVIEW:
Nice little short, here. The atmosphere definitely grabbed me. I don't think you needed the VO "whispers". I watched it a second time with just the right channel and it worked much better. The lighting was very nice and definitely kept me on edge. Good job.

FILMMAKER-TO-FILMMAKER:
Already mentioned the VO. The VFX have been touched on, but I think the whole "see the woman's face through the hole" thing probably seemed like a cool idea, but it didn't seem to quite work. The phone conversation needs to be re-edited. People have already nailed the non-actors acting, BUT, I really think you can save it. You just have to recut it, both sound and pic, to really speed up the lead actress a bit so she's not talking s-l-o-w staccato. It doesn't sound like English is her first language, which is fine and I actually like that, but it's just a bit too slow, like she's thinking too much about what she's supposed to be saying. But I really think you can tighten it up.

Also, in the phone conversation, it's too much of the friend's(?) POV. In other words, we should be hearing the friend's voice in the receiver while looking at the lead's reactions instead of vice versa.

Ok, enough nit-picking. I hope to see more films from you. You are definitely an ambitious filmmaker who knows how to balance the drama with the in-your-face stuff. Good job!

Thanks, Defcon i'm still a beginner in Shake, I worked pretty hard on that morph effect though so i'm glad to hear that it was worthwhile; I really dug the effects you had in yours too!

Thanks, Cinealma. I agree the VO whispers were probably a little too much in the second part they probably could have been a little more subtle. I will try a listen with just the right channel.

Hahaha, yeah I think she was thinking about what she was saying! The problem with Hiroko is that when she is nervous her english gets pretty bad, I thought it helped being that she was supposed to be nervous and scared but I think the thinking part is aparent there also good catch.
You may like this, Hiroko IS truly afraid of the basement and won't go down there unless accompanied by someone else. Go figure, there are few basements in Japan?

Also, in the phone conversation, it's too much of the friend's(?) POV. In other words, we should be hearing the friend's voice in the receiver while looking at the lead's reactions instead of vice versa.

Yeah, I had everyone on different days and times, I did the best with what I had and there was alot of mismatch and flow problems I had to face, but I agree. Next time I will try to have a budget ready for some better actors!

Thanks Cinealma, I appreciate the time you put into the critique. I admire your work, and I respect your opinion.:dankk2:

Niiiiice, very creepy. Have you considered pushing in through the hole once she starts to scream? Is all the shaking part of the effect, or is it an artifact of some kind?

Much better... a little shaky, but looking good! I wish I could do this sort of thing.

I really like the look of it. Would you be able to cut to just her reaction from a different angle, without showing him? And then back to the money shot. That might help people to not focus on the "effect" as much.

Looks good man! Nice work.

Mike

HappyGobo, I tried pushing in thru the hole, but she smiled after the scream so it didn't work so well:engel017:. The shaking was part of the effect not an artifact I thought it added to the intensity of the shot it was also in the original!

Hey Movie Stunts,

I think your story was decent, but I don't know really what the guy was so worried about to commit suicide. He had a baby on the way and there were voice overs, but it didn't convince me enough he would kill himself. It might have been better to start with him just crying and show shots of the sonogram and wine and then just have himself shoot himself right then. It would be good to explain why he killed himself though. I thought you were going to tie in the house with it driving him crazy or something, but that was only glazed over by the woman talking to his wife.

The sound is done really well. I love that gunshot to his head. The shots were good too.

The asian woman's delivery was too slow as in she just needed to read them quicker because she paused a lot and it seemed like she was trying to remember lines.

Your special effects look alright, but I don't feel like they were warranted in what we saw of the story. There were no indications of anything supernatural until the special efxs on the guy. These would have played better if you had something supernatural or some history of the house early on in the film.

This reminded me of Stir of Echoes a little and I think your story is good, but just needs to be flushed out a little more.

Laters,
Ando

Before I bought Shake months ago, I didn't know the first thing about roto, animation, ect... (some may argue I still don't ) It's alot of fun to learn and I reccomend it!

If I did cut to a diff shot it would be a jump shot, it was meant to be a singular shot, but I totally get your point. Thanks!
