In The Field SDHC Storage/Backup

I will add my two cents. I back up everything I shoot on the road each evening on my Macbook Pro. I also carry a good supply of 16gig cards in a couple of Pelican cases. I bought a Nexto 2700 unti to back up with but found it was not compatible with the files from the HMC 150. When I bought it from Digital Discount I tried to get help and they just ignored all my emails and I finally got through to the head office in Asia. They have now ceased to do business with Digital Discount and have found another company in the USA to rep the product. International Supplies, http://nextodiusa.com/
They answer emails, listen and they now have my Nexto2700 and have been doing tests, working with an HMC150 and the head office re-writing software to get it working properly.
To be able to remove your card, insert it and get a clean backup from a device you can wear on your belt in the field is a comforting bit of insurance. Yes, nothing is perfect and this could happen or that could happen but the bottom line is many of us don't work with assistants and don't do gigs that allows you much time or often space to mess with a laptop or netbook. So I will keep you posted on the Nexto . I know Barry from International Sales monitors this and all the groups.

as for having to leave thelaptop open at an event, check the power settings . you might be able to set it up to NOT shut down when you close it. i used a laptop that way on my desk for a while when my desktop crashed and the replacement didnt arrive yet

I use this one - small and stylish: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...4775_FEF_PixelPak_V1_Memory_Card.html#reviews

Best Buy had these on sale recently for about 7 bucks. I bought 2 even though at the time I only had 4 cards. Then I noticed that they also support PCMCIA cards, which happen to be the same size and form factor as P2 cards. This is a cheap and handy case for SD/P2 shooters.

While idle, you open your netbook and copy the contents of a card to the HDD.
You have idle time at a wedding?! Man, I'm lucky if I get to eat my whole meal.

Plus, a backup device is just one more piece of equipment to carry and keep track of. The less gear I can get away with, the better. Isn't that one of the benefits of using a small hand-held camera instead of the 5 P2 slot shoulder-mount rigs?

I'll echo Phil's comments. I have the same Pelican case and it stays in my pocket during a shoot - as well as when the camera case is in an overhead bin in an airplane during travel.

If the card malfunctions, you're screwed anyway. You're trying to protect against loss. Stick the cards in a case after you set the tab to "lock" on the SD card, and stick the case in the same pocket as your car keys.

I had the same fear of loss issues with the small DV tapes, so I automatically stuck them in my camera case no matter what and they showed up the next morning.

Well yeah...the topic was SDHC storage in the field. "In the field" damage means (to me) physical damage to the card in the field. If the card "malfunctions", I don't see how setting the tab to "lock" will save the data or prevent it from malfunctioning.

obviously, as 'accelv' stated, it won't.

a netbook is a great multi-purpose tool to backup/dump SD cards...either to the internal hdd and/or to an external usb hdd.
use the suggested card case to store and protect your cards and keep them separate from the hdd backup so that if one gets lost or stolen you still have the other.
