C100: In need of Slow-motion. Options?

The new Panasonic G6 could be another option, it uses the same sensor as the GH2, but with updated hardware and features.

I was looking at that when it was recently announced. My problem though is it's not available till June. :/ I'm looking into a FS100 to add to the bag or upgrade to a FS700. Thanks All.

Does anyone have a workflow for 60i -> 24p slow motion this in premiere or ae?

Someone posted a workflow that works for AE. But I had to drop the AVCHD file into premiere 1080 60i timeline first, dynamically link it to AE, then do the steps below. Not sure how this person started from AE...

+1. I'd also like a workflow for AE (or FCPx if its possible there?)

Here's a little FCPX test I did with both 50i and 60i to 24p and 25p.

FCPX's Optical Flow isn't really 'reliable' and I suspect Twixtor would be better.

So, I'll be shooting 50i for this method for now.

FWIW 50i and 25p can exist on the same SDHC disk, 60i shots would need their own disk - but I didn't see enough difference between 50i and 60i to 25fps to warrant the faff.

Quite frankly, the FS700 has spoiled us. Rent one for the day if you need slomo. :)

I'm curious how this turned out for the OP (Babu). What did you eventually choose?

I myself am torn between the C100 and FS700 because of the slow mo issue. But I like this idea of getting the lumix g6 or gh3 for slow mo purposes.
I'd rather get the C100 as long as there's a decent-enough slo mo solution.

I found a great deal on a used FS700. It cost me $1500 to upgrade the price difference between the two new. I miss the sharper image and 1 stop better noise performance in the C100 but my slowmotion needs are met. Also will be sending in the camera in august for the firmware update for s-log and 4k.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you made a good move.
I'm leaning towards the C100 just cuz it's more compact and a rigged out FS700 has a higher chance of breaking my back if I do a lot of handheld (or shoulder mounted) shots. If I needed a cam strictly for film-type projects I'd go with the fs700.

I've experimented a lot with C100's slow motion in the last couple weeks. It's not razor sharp like the default 24p, but it holds considerably more detail than my 600D...if that says anything. It's good enough that I speculate I would be fine intercutting with it. I am not really crazy about slow motion, but it certainly works.

60i works, just shoot 60i, interpret it to progressive, and put Magicbullet Frames on it, and it just works

just played around with shooting 50i then slowing it down 50% on a 25p timeline. Results look great and way better than 50p from my 7D.

is there much resolution difference between 720p 50fps and 1080i 50fps? As to my eyes they look really similar.

i love this camera!

Shawnvfx - maybe you could post some footage to illustrate your method?

in reply to you, I have an example,

please skip all the way to 4:25 .. and also 4:50

this is a 60i to 24p using twixtor and Magic bullet frames (deinterlace), on PC, no transcoding, just drop it on timeline in PP, no transcoding or anything

you can see the edge of the girl being blury, thats cuz of the fps not fast enough (which means I shouldve shot on 120fps with some other camera for this kind of slo mo), but I slowed it down to this pace anyways since its a zero budget lovestory (well, the budget is $20 dollars ! 17.99 roses from Costco and 3.99 candles from IKEA)

lol, not a pro test, Im just saying it is more than enough to trick those who doesnt know anything about camera.

I did a test recently. Just a quick fun test. You could skip to 00:26 for the slow mo.

Same as how Snap described it. Just remember you need to shoot at high shutter speed. And have fun with it!

So you don't interpret the 60i as progressive? Just drag it onto a 30p timeline and set speed to 50% and the interlaced becomes progressive? Your stuff did look amazingly good...and I don't mean that in an offensive way...I was expecting pretty bad slomo from that procedure.

Also, specifically what is the "high shutter speed" you shot at? Thanks!

Step 1) Shoot 50i/60i on Camera (the higher shutter speed the better)

Step 2) Import into Premiere (no need to interpret Footage)

Step 3) Insert into 24/25/30p sequence (keep existing settings if they prompt you)

Step 4) Slow footage down to 50% (25/30p) or 40% (24p)

Step 5) Watch the magic :) (yes, no sorcery involved)
