IBC footage...

Hey Jim,

I would have to imagine that the 4k is not that portable. So can you arrange a showing at your shop? I would love to see what my deposit is on!
Jay

i know RED wasn't planning for DV expo west .. BUT it does have some large private ( away from main floor) rooms upstairs that Sony a few years ago used to show their HD clips on their 2k projector ...
DV expo does attract 1000's and i'm pretty sure a RED 4k screening would increase the persons that wouldn't go to the show if they could see RED 4k clips on 4k projector ( well i think they would come if you used any projector) ..
this screening would draw all the LA big rental houses ..
it would even get the CML'ers out to it - and at the end i would guess most of the CML'ers would have some apologies ...

Historically those who perceive themselves to be Bourgeoisie never apologize to those they perceive to be Proletariat…they simply adopt the useful inventions of the supposed Proletariat, and then take credit for their implementation.

So the footage is going to have the same breadth and width as film without the grain, am I correct in that assumption?

How about a couple of still TIFFs at full resolution, plus a QT at 1080p? Should give us a pretty good idea of what's going on, even if it's not 4k projection (which most of us won't be able to use anyway)...

wow breadth.. havnt heard that in awhile... but yes.. your on the right path with that assumption.

Jim, you should make a short film and submit it to film festivals around the world. Well, at least the ones with 4k projectors.

I’m going to be in California for Screenwriting Expo 5 which runs October 18 through to October 25 (with the affiliate events) and I’m kind of hoping that there will be some way to see this 4K footage while I’m down there. Any chance that Red will be showing something in the 26 through 31 time frame?

I’d ask for more time off work but I gotta make sure that I can actually buy my Red One when it is ready.

Some full res stills and a 1080p quicktime would be great! Alot of us are able to display that ;)
For sure in the upcoming months. By now, basically 720p. :dankk2:

We have a real problem here. How do we post a clip (after IBC) that does this footage justice? I really want everyone to see RED on a 4K projector for the 1st time.

We are open to suggestions.

Jim

If I'm not mistaken, there is a 4k projector and a huge screen with many seats at The Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

I believe this could be a good feasible idea.
I also know that they conduct occasional technical test screenings there so it seems to me that there's a very good chance they'll go for it.

a 2k still image in 16bit format is all I need to ever see, let me download and color correct that and I am very happy.

I guess I need to put $1,000 down to do that though..;)

I'm for providing downloads, as you can learn much more about an image. A 4k presentation will be very cool, yet a lot of content looks great that way (most Hollywood features have a 2K DI.) A 4K projector just makes it harder to see the pixels, just as a good 2K projector will do a theatrical viewing distances. The Sony projector is aweome, and using it is great marketing move (Red is good at that.) However, to really show what the Red sensor can do, encode a sequence a resolution your customer can play (say 1080p) and the show the same sequence at full frame, then zoomed in 150%, then zoomed in 200%, with more detail showing at each level. Of you need a high quality, cross platform, presentation codec (hey, we have one of those), it can be done easily.

I have a suggestion for you Jim... why don't you try to get a short demo of your product (realizing a nice clip) to be shown in theatres around the world before some good blockbuster motion picture that lots of people go to see? Like the guys from Pixar have done with some of theyr shorts to promote their 3d animation techniques... :dankk2:

Funny though... a thing that comes out of this forum is that we all want that Red camera, but none of us would have the chance to watch the footage that we would shot in it's full resolution... funny isn't it?:banned:

Jim - making a 4k digital movie camera for a price of $17k has to be considered frivolous considering that we have to buy a (poorly designed) 4k Sony projector with a $100k price tag on it (which is 4 times the price of the RED one with cage and lens). Surely RED must be capable of revolutionizing that whole industry too while they're at it ;-)

Nevertheless - I'd gladly go around the globe to view your 4k footage!

Well, since directors, Dp's, on movies with tens of Millions of dollars watch dailies on a 2K projector, I don't think it's that odd... :)

As a practical matter, I think of 4k as wildly impractical for the foreseeable future. When I get the RED I intend to use it as a variable-frame-rate 1080p camcorder with noiseless imagery, see-in-the-dark sensitivity and Super35 depth of field. I'm hoping RED is listening and has included 1080p 4:4:4 mode; in that configuration it should be brilliant. 4K? Nice for bragging rights, I guess... same with 2k... but as for the daily workhorse, a variable-frame-rate 1080p with S35 DOF would be solid gold.

Come on Barry - you're a resourceful guy. I know you better than that. I'm sure you'll find some use for 2k, 4k, and 2540p! If you're flying a fighter with tons of ordinance slung under your wings, you see a good target, my guess is that you'll be pressing some buttons...

That said, if you just use 1080p on down in resolutions for a while, you'll probably have good company - 90% of us RED users.

PS: And what's wrong with braggin' rights?
