IBC 2017 :What to expect?

Right. So you agree that 120 converted to 24p can look good. Hence if say a camcorder is shot at 60p, it could be converted to 24p and look good.

I agree completely. I watched The Hobbit in 48p and hated it and then at 24p and loved it.

Aside from that camcorders still look bad at 24p, in my opinion.

Depends on the camcorder, of course.

How about this: I say that any camera at 24p looks less cheap than any other camera (with the same depth of field) at 60p.

Sorry for taking the thread off topic.

Technically, pretty much everything we're shooting on are 'camcorders'. C300MKII: camcorder. VariCam: camcorder. F55: camcorder. Alexa: camcorder. Amira: camcorder. Etc., etc.

I think of camcorders as handheld fixed-lens cameras with a zoom rocker. Kind of how B&H organizes their cameras.

Consumer camcorders: the palm-size cams that are mostly cheap besides a few that have borderline pro features (the AX100 is the most expensive on that list besides the 2 new releases).

Professional camcorders: the DVX200s (and such) and everything below (although they have expensive shoulder cameras in that section too, which I think should have their own area but there aren't many left of those so it's just easier to throw them in there).

They call the others "Digital Cine Cameras" and have a picture of a discontinued URSA as the head of the pack, lol.

I would personally call them "Cinema Cameras" or "Cinema Systems".

Apart from the HFR whenever that happens, I think it's the dynamic range that makes camcorder footage look video-ish. You can shoot slog with these new Sony toys and it will look great, just as the RX100 IV/V does. The second factor would be color, but I find 4k 420 definitely good enough: it has the same color information as 1080p 444, and I don't think I need 10-bit if my DR not great (my RX100IV has nice DR, but it's still one stop short of the pocket -another small sensor camera that can definitely look cinematic- and two less than the FS7).

Any word on their Live Switching firmware update for the Sumo recorder? So frustrating when manfacturers tout features that aren't even available. I thought it was supposed to be released 3rd Quarter but I may be wrong and haven't been able to find any updates on the status.

no word on that firmware yet.

On the 8" 480p screen that's in the headrest or the 17" 480p screen that's 25 feet away down the aisle? I almost watched Tracks (2013) on a plane once; glad I didn't, that film is gorgeous.

Emirates Business class...

The YouTube video you posted has the 'video' look. Not cinematic to my eye. YMMV.

Only if you go down to 1080p and interpolate.

No, you're thinking of 10-bit 1080p out of 8-bit 4k, which I said nothing about because AFAIK it doesn't really work (yes, you get 10 bit, but if there's banding it will still be there, so nothing was fixed).

I was referring to the resolution of the color channels. In 4k 420, the color channels are 1920x1080. In 1080p 444, the color channels are 1920x1080.

So from a practical point of view how are you working with this ? You are saying that you get the same level of color information as 1080p 444 by leaving it in 4K ?
Not sure I am following you.

Thanks for the info, I will visit IBC on Tuesday. Buy all the chinese gear at the end of the day, because they don't want to ship it back to China :-)

last year a complete stand was for sale.

WOW, that's an awesome reason to visit. Happy shopping spree!!

You can either leave it as 4k, or downscale it in post to 1080p. In either case, the resolution of your color channels will be 1920x1080 (with whatever bit depth your original footage had). The bottom line is: 1080p at 8-bit 444 doesn't have any more color information than 4k at 8-bit 420. Now, 10-bit, that's a different thing.

Anyone else interested in the 18mm Tokina Vista Cine Lense? I'm excited to get my hands on the Vistas and try them out!

Steadygum (horrible name, but a good alternative to the shoulder mount solutions)
https://vimeo.com/234195785?from=outro-embed

When I am shooting from a boat, I place the monopod on my vest pocket and mount the camera and lens on the monopod. The camera strap remains on my neck. The Steadygum is a cool design. It seems to make the movements smooth. The 1595 euro is a hard knock on the back though and is certainly tough to handle for many.

They've actually taken a very old idea and just moved the "support belt" from the waist to the shoulders. Peter Lisand (and I'm sure others) had this system/solution a few decades ago.
I saw the "Steadystcik" mentioned in the Newsshooter comments which is $99. Newsshooter comments also mostly revolved around this item being way overpriced. It looks like a better design than the $99 Steadystick, beefier, and better with the weight going to the other shoulder, but still way overpriced. I think they're also trying to take advantage that a lot of people with ENG gear spent a lot of money on that ENG gear, so $1900 is affordable to them. Still feel like this is attempted robbery, charging way more than what it likely cost them to make.

Agreed. If this cost $200 I would buy one in a heartbeat. But $1900 is ridiculous.
