I vote for DVSLR or DVSC. EDIT -forget that, it's HDSLR

We've wondered what to call these cameras, these SLRs that have video on them. They've been called DSLRs because they're Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras.

But how does that address video?

Some have said "what about VDSLR"? It keeps DSLR, but adds V on for Video. Well, besides the chlamydial imagery it inspires, it reads clunkily (Video Digital SLR).

And we can't call them DSMC's, because that's a Red registered trademark for digital still and motion camera.

So how about DVSLR? DV = digital video, SLR = single lens reflex, seems to fit.

Except for the GH1, which isn't an SLR at all (because it doesn't have a mirror box). So how about DVSC, Digital Video and Still Camera?

I dunno, something feels "right" about the first two letters being "DV"...

Too confusing Barry. How about something simple and easy to remember?

I propose ILLSVCTATP....short for Interchangeable lens large sensor video cameras that also take pictures (gh1, GHX-100, Scarlet, more geared toward video and sans mirror box) and ILLSSCTATV for Interchangeable Lens large sensor still cameras that also take video (5D mkII, 7D, D300s, D3, etc, where they are more geared toward stills and have a mirror box.)

Much simpler and easier. :D

Until cameras like the GF1 and EP-1 get better video features I see no reason that DVSLR won't work...the GH1 is trying to mimick an SLR which is why it has the formfactor it does as well as the great viewfinder.

I've realised since I got my GH1 that very few people these days actually know what SLR stands for. The whole construction with a mirror viewfinder is a mystery to them, even to some who actually own one. Mostly they go "Still Long... something". So DVSC actually would make sense for most people.

These days SLR equates to the shape/form factor regardless of whether there is a mirror there any more. And the line further blurs.
Look at the 'point and shoot' sized GF1 that takes interchangeable lenses. What would you call that?

Jeez ... stick that little cam on the end of a zoom and it would look like a hi-tech lens cap.

One thing I've noticed is that the SLR form factor is good prep for scarlet. Its a small box with a sensor.
Need it on your shoulder? Buy rails. And whether we recognize it or not, we are using these SLR bodies in a parallel fashion to Jim's DSMC concept.
Especially with the 7D that needs HDMI connected monitor because its lack of articulated LCD.

So back to what to call these things.
DSMC is the best name but its coined. If we can forget 'SLR' originates from the mirror and now applies to form factor then hdSLR, vDSLR or DVSLR all work.

I remember when D got added to the front so following history I added lowercase v on the front. vDSLR.
It conveys what I mean with little or no explanation, even to those who don't know cameras.

Being the lone wolf renegade, never follow the herd stud that I am, I will continue to call them what I have called them in the past and pay no mind to what you conformists/nazis try to foist on the masses.

vDSLR

HDSLR definitely has a better ring to it....

...but I'm just wondering how much will power it's taking Barry to resist posting that these cameras resolve closer to DV resolution as opposed to HD.

Since they're not really "HD" cameras, how about HDeeSLR instead? :D
