I really need an answer to this question!

Asked a similar question in the HVX section, but thought this might reach a wider audience (and it is not specific to any camera)

In my search for a low cost HD monitoring solution I bought a component to VGA cable to run the signal to an LCD monitor. I hooked it up to the component cable for the HVX, but no joy. So I hooked it up directly to the component out of a DVD player. Still nothing.

It seems counter-intuitive to me that this won't work. After all, why do they make a component to VGA cable if I can't send a component out to an LCD monitor?

So I guess the question is, can you send a component signal from a source to an LCD/VGA monitor through a component to VGA cable effectively?

If so, what am I doing wrong?

Are you certain the HVX is sending the signal out to component?
You have to choose your outputs in the menu... I don't have my HPX with me right now so I can't check, but look through your menu options and double check.

That would be my first guess.

Jim, use the HDMI out on the HVX. Component out is fairly useless in that situation

The HVX has HDMI out ? :undecided

I had it hooked up to my HDTV and that worked fine. I also ran a sgnal froma DVD player through the Component to DVI cable with no success.

I am stumped.

The HVX doesn't have HDMI out. My guess is that whatever VGA adapter you bought only goes one way, that is, it's for getting a VGA source out and not a component one. I tried the same thing a while ago with a Mayflash adapter, no luck.

Thanks. I thought about that before I bought it. But I felt confident because the package is labeled as an "HDTV RGB/15pin to 3 RCA Component Video Cable", which at first made me think it was one way from VGA to Component, but under that it says it isn't for "VGA to to HDTV/Projector RCA component video". I assumed then, if it were a one way cable, it would go from component to VGA.

I mean, it has to change component video to VGA, (or vice/versa, contrary to the above language) right? Why else would it even exist?

It exists because some devices (mostly data projectors) have the capability to read component video through their VGA inputs. However, to do that, the device in question has to have the specs of "component video" in its firmware, to recognize it as a valid signal. (The adapter cable is not converting the signal, just the pinouts.) Your average computer monitor doesn't have "component video" in its firmware, so it doesn't know how to display the signal, and so it just stays blank.

Hmm, mine did, as I recall.

HVX doesn't have any sort of digital HD output. No HDMI and no HD-SDI.

HPX170 has HD-SDI out.
HMC150 has HDMI out.

But HVX only has analog component.

So unless I have a monitor with Component in, I guess I need a converter.

Oh well, them's the breaks. I still think the HVX was the right choice since I deliver so much SD/DV on tape to clients, but Dan's comparison of the 2 cameras (HVX and HPX-170) here definitely underscores some of the things I wish it had.

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess I either need to wait 6 months to get a DP1 or get a converter.

The solution hangs strongly on WHAT "LCD monitor" you are talking about? Was this a component input with 3 RCA jacks (Y/pB/pR) or was this a 15-pin D-connector (like for a computer)?

How do you know the component input on your LCD monitor isn't broke? Has it ever worked with any input?

And a related question, are you sure that the component output from the HVX is working? I don't have an HVX, but my Sony PMW-EX1 XDCAM camcorder rquires several menu settings to enable what you want from the various outputs.

There are some decent monitors out there with component in, like the Samsung T2x0HD series; I have the regular T220 (just a monitor) and like it a lot, been thinking about the T220HD for a combo monitor/TV but haven't rounded up the cash yet. The crazy thing is, Newegg has the T220HD right now cheaper than the T220... :)

The 220 is only 1680x1050, though, so you might want the T240HD for 1080 signals (and it's only $20 more right now).

It's a 15 pin/VGA port. If it was component, I wouldn't have a problem. I would just go from the component out to the monitor. The component out is working because I hooked it up to my HDTV. Works fine. I also tried the cable (which I have since returned) on 3 different monitors.

Thanks for the tip on the monitors Captain.

But now it begs the question whether I am better off with a 1080P LCD HDTV (I have seen 22" ones on sale for 300 or less), or and LCD monitor, using a composite to HDMI converter?

The money is a wash (or close enough). So which would be better to monitor the HVX? I just can't spend the cash on a production monitor right now.

I can't imagine that any composite to VGA, composite to HDMI, composite to anything, converter that's in the same price range as one of these monitors is going to be much good. That said, I'm not real familiar with these sorts of converters, so I could be wrong. :)

And I guess the added benefit of an HDTV is that I can actually use it as ...well, an HDTV.

And, before I actually jump off the cliff, composite will carry an HD signal...right? (please say yes, please say yes, please say yes....):undecided

Dang it, that's what I meant...Component. :-)

I am so bad with approximate alliterative assertions.

Good news for me though!

Thanks Barry.
