i-mac / SUV

ROCKMORE

I'm doing a lot of shooting on the road and thought an i-mac quad 2.7GHz 21.5 inch would make a good remote edit workstation. I know macs are well built but has anybody tried this?

Any reason not to use a 17" MacBook Pro? I know it's not quite as fast, but it's no shlub, has better powering options, and for now (until more Thunderbolt things come along) has more basic expandability via the expresscard slot...

I like the setup as a power/cost solution... of course a laptop makes more sense for portable solutions, however with an DC/AC converter can work well.
I even would get a cheap UPS so that you can run the computer with confidence. (Frankly speaking, your looking at a huge display, tons of power, and a "portable" package (ill be it, i tad bit hard to tuck away)
I modified a 4000mAh Li-Po 12.5v battery pack to work in conjunction with my DC/AC (400watt). It acts as a UPS, because its charging while piggy backing with the DC from the car.
I get about 30Mins of run time and cost about $40 and an hour of wiring.
I'm a bit of a DYI freak, and with limited tools over seas...this was my solution. However, Ive seen UPS going for as little as $35 and will power your computer for a good 20-30 mins.
If you can store your iMac safely, there really is no reason why you couldn't save yourself a good $1000.
The connivence of working with a laptop are arguable though...but if your doing SERIOUS editing on the road, I think the iMac is a much better solution.

as far as mobility goes. i guess it depends on how mobile and how much edit/encode horsepower you want. all versus how much you wanna spend...
on one end you have ultra mobile = macbook pro

on the other end, you could rig a full on macpro tower and monitor into a medium sized pelican case and basically have a full featured mobile rig. (you could easily cut some hinged ports for vents and never have to take the mac out of the case)

then in the middle, there's the imac. not the best of either end. but a good compromise of both.

what id probably suggest is get a 17" macbook pro. fitted with at least a single, higher-end SSD if not an SSD internal raid boot drive (which would replace the internal DVD drive) and an esata expresscard adapter and a couple of esata raids all in say a pelican 1610 / 1550 and that would be one sweet little mobile rig.

the reason id go macbook pro instead of imac is core portability. when all was said and done. i could pop the laptop out of the kit and still watch netflix on the patio with relative ease... ; )

Netflix is over priced and screwed themselves over recently... Amazon and iTunes are better alternatives.
Get the iMac if your going to use it for high end editing (on a budget) which includes the occasional road trip (DC/AC inverter and a UPS). But if your going to be always on the road... go with Netflix. (The laptop).
Frankly speaking, I dont think I can do serious editing on the road. Me being the dark room, zero distractions type, id get the laptop for portability...fast edits... and simplicity.

why are we talking about netflix? it was used as a metaphor for busywork / entertainment...
