"I know.. Kung Fu?"

I finally stepped up and enrolled on a martial arts course which should lead to a black belt in Wing Tsun.

I start this Monday, I'm excited but a bit nervous too, I'm good friends with the owner of the school so I know I'm in safe hands so to speak.

I'd just like to hear about other peoples experiences in learning martial arts?

I've got 22 years of martial arts experience. I've been a black belt for 18 years. I think, in time, you'll find it's one of the best moves you've ever made.

One piece of advice I would give you is to look into as many different types of martial arts as possible. They all have strengths and weaknesses. No art is perfect. Even if it's just spending an afternoon with someone who knows what they're doing. You'll be amazed by what you can pick up in a short period of time. I've got experience with Tae Kwon Do (two different styles), Karate, Kung Fu and Kempo... and I'm always looking to learn more.

That's the one with the weird but totally effective punching style. I love how they move to the side, re-direct and unleash with a series of punches and strikes that would make anyone rethink, but by then it's too late.

I tend to take things that I see and like and add them into my choreo I've considered borrowing some of that technique (read not a lot) myself, I'll be doing some of it in "Divinity" but that striking dynamic is very complex and it's not like a lot of other martial arts I've seen. And the speed I see people do this at (people who really know it not actors or sped up footage) is incredible. Big fan of grabbing the wrist and taking control of the opponent by the way.

Here's a video of one guy in action doing training. Watch the hand and striking drills. :

This is a very good explanation of the punching technique

Anhar - a geek and an action hero, wow, I am like really digging you! I don't have any experience, but my cousins did, one of them always wore loose jeans in case he had to kick somebody, small wonder he became a cop. Just be careful and don't hurt your hands, they were mean for typing.

I briefly studied Wing Chun. It's a powerful and effective form of Kung Fu. A quick wikipedia search says Wing Tsun is a division of that?

That youtube link was sick. Those forms take a lot of time and discipline to get right.

Good luck, Anhar!

I saw a little clip of that youtube video, reminds me of the ghetto when there is a domestic violence call and a couple is *****-slapping each other, yo, I'm just saying. While I love martial arts, I really don't like the punching, maybe that's why I prefer to see weapons involved that keep the individual at a distance.

Again, Anhar, don't hurt them knuckles.

Thanks guys!

Charli did I mention the program includes weapons training? (excluding firearms :D of course ) :)

Now heading off to my first lesson.

//edit: damn HorseFilms, you really are a dark horse! (no pun intended), much respect you to, I could only hope to attain a fraction of your skills.

Anhar - okay, it's got weapons, I'm all for it, you go! Now, you know you HAVE to post pictures of you in class. I mean seriously dude, you opened the door, we better see some picture in next week's class! Use your camera phone, we're not picky.
