I just bought a new MBP to deal with P2 - and now I am scared

MBP / dual adapter issuess, problems with the new quicktime updates, leopard vs. tiger and P2 card read / corruption problems... P2CMS hanging? WTF??

I don't have any P2 cards yet (and don't have the dual adapter yet), because we aren't going to get the HVX camera gear until the summer, so I can't do a test; but as I read about it, it seems that the P2 workflow has been broken by recent software updates...??

Everything worked fine on a previous job last summer where we used a G4 powerbook to injest P2 cards with P2CMS and FCP 5.1, but that was all rented gear; so I planned to buy the gear for my next big shoot...

So, as I have a show starting next month, I just bought this new Macbook pro, because I want to be able to QUICKLY offload P2 cards in the feild to the laptop/FW drive and continue shooting.
I'll deal with importing in FCP at a later time, but hopefully it won't be an issue...

this is a previous version of the MBP, so it shipped with the leopard disk, but tiger 10.4.10 and quicktime 7.2 pre installed... I am not going to instal leopard or upgrade quicktime until I get a better idea of waht is going on.

Can anyone tell me what they are doing, what software versions they are running, etc?

I just did a ton of searchs and came up with all sorts of confusing scary things....

thnx for any insights...

I've got all the latest versions of OS, Quicktime and FCP running fine & dandy on a new MBP.. Just updated from my old Pwerbook G4 with no hitches.

Of course there will always be something, but if you do your homework, you should have no problems.

I've been using a MBP, Tiger and a Duel adapter for nearly a year now. It works like a charm. However in general, I'm a bit nervous about upgrading to Leopard and probably won't do so for awhile. That being said, there seem to be a lot of folks on Leopard who are having no problem.

As shorleinedigital said, just do your homework.

I field edited a bunch of footage with FCP 6.02, Leopard 10.5.2, and QT 7.3.1 with a G-Tech FW800 without a problem with a client.

You don't see people posting here and saying I have no problems.

You only read about the problems.

Stay away from anything beyond QT 7.3.1 and you're fine.

thanks for that - are you using a MBP with dual adapter?
- how can I get QT 7.3.1? is there an archive somewhere?
apple.com makes it impossible to find old versions... and I love that they never publish change logs...

awesome!

thanks... I'll install Leopard and QT 7.3.1 later this week and get the system up and running and do some P2 tests.

One report I read indicatred that a fresh instal of Leopard using the dual adapter for the first time had issues.. but if you had used it with tiger before the OS update it was ok... that sounds crazy to me...?

on that note - what version of the dual adapter drivers are you using?

I never, ever install a OS upgrade over an existing OS. Never a good idea.

Always a back up and then erase and clean install.

No update or archive and installs at all. No migration assistant.

hmmm...

ok.
So how do I format the main drive to do that? just use disk utility and re format or erase?
I am not sure if the Leoapard disk the machine came with is a full install or expects tiger to be there... how do i tell?
thnx

I run the newest of everything, fresh current model mbp and dual adapter... The only issue is having to reboot throwing your dual adapter in to get it to recognize, which isn't even really that bad.

argh so my PC laptop just died so now I'll be using my MBP with a Duel Adapter for offloading as well. I'm running 10.5.2 and quicktime 7.4x (the latest)

Just to make sure: If i DL'd quicktime 7.3.1 would I have to delete my quicktime 7.4x or can I leave both on there?

I just did a quick test with a new Penryn MBP, OSX 10.5.2 and Quicktime 7.4.5 and I did not have any issues using Barry's Mac p2 workflow. Played with the footage in FCP 5.1.4 and didn't run into any problems. I have a shoot on monday and i'll post my experience here.

thanks alot

I can't test or anything for a few weeks because I don't ahve the gear yet, and am currently swamped with an other editing job (non-P2)

UPDATE: Had workflow issues.

So I had a shoot today using:

Penryn MBP
OSX 10.5.2
Quicktime 7.4.5
Duel Adapter
8gb P2 card
720p 24pn

Using Barry's Mac P2 Workflow, I could not offload the 8gb P2 card to an external drive via firewire 400. I did not try offloading to the mac's hdd. After about 1/3rd of the data was transfered, the Mac would freeze up and a pop up window saying I need to shutdown/restart came up. Is that what a kernel panic is? It happened all 3 times I tried.

In short: P2 offloads in OSX 10.5.2 and Quicktime 7.4.5 caused my Mac to freeze up requiring a restart.

addition:

I was able to offload using Barry's Mac P2 workflow straight from the HVX via firewire without issues so far (i've only tested it twice with a full 8gb card). Only when using the Duel Adapter am I getting kernel panics.
