T2i I did a bad thing

I rented out my camera without properly explaining the ML installed... everyone was in a rush. Anyway the camera got run doing timelapses without the ML card. It apparently worked fine for about 6 hours or so, then shutdown. Now I can boot it with or without an ML card installed and take pictures, but the LCD screen refuses to come on. If I try to do much else (which includes pressing the "record" button) , I get an error 70 in the view finder window. After which I have to remove the battery to reset the camera to make the flashing "Err 70" go away.

I'm pretty sure the battery wasn't removed immediately. Although, he did say he tried taking the battery out and putting a new one in... so maybe he did.

As I shoot 98% video with this camera, without the LCD screen this thing is a brick to me.

Is there anything I can do to fix this or am I boned?

Any help is sooooo appreciated.

I had a similar problem.
The camera with the ML card would turn on, but the screen would not turn on. Without the ML card, the screen would turn on.
What I did was format the card on the computer and re-install ML.

Hrm... no luck. I formatted a card FAT on the mac. Put the latest *.FIR file on the SD card. Made sure the camera was set to "P" mode. Put the card in the camera and STILL the display is black. "Menu"/"Display" buttons do nothing.

I wonder if I should try loading the latest manufacturer's firmware?

David,

So, even if you take a non ML card, power on, press menu, nothing comes on screen?
If you take a still photo, and normally a preview comes on screen a few sec after the shot, no image comes on the LCD after the shot?

Question, was the photo taken? cuz if so it could be that only the LCD screen is "damaged". I'm trying to isolate weather its the firmware/ml thats screwing up the cam or the LCD hardware itself is "damaged."

Hey... thanks for replying.

So to answer your questions: With a non ML card, power on, press menu, and nothing comes on the screen: correct
Take a still photo, no preview of the image: correct

A photo is taken and it writes it correctly to the card, as I can display it on my computer.

But get this, LCD isn't damaged either (which I was starting to suspect as well)... because while using the EOS utility to see if I could update the firmware, the LCD did display information about the firmware... however, that was pretty much it. I updated the firmware and unplugged the camera and the LCD displayed nothing, no matter what I pressed.

If I go to movie mode, the mirror moves up for a few seconds, then back down, then the viewfinder displays "err 70". Same thing happens if I press "live view mode" button in one of the still photo modes. I'll have to remove the battery to reset the camera.

So, I'm really not sure what's going on.

quick google search suggests the following... (from here on DVXuser too)

I recently had my T2i apparently die when is started to freeze and give an Error 70 message whenever I went to movie mode or hit Live View in still mode. I scoured the web and found many people with the same problem on 5D's , 7D's, T2i's etc. and they all had to send it in ot Canon. Sometimes it was random and sometimes final like mine.
Anyway on the verge of sending it in to Canon repair I found a post on the web that fixed it. At least it fixed the problem on mine which may have begun due to a faulty handshake with an HDMI monitor.
So here is the fix:

--power down camera and remove battery
--power down HDMI device or powered adapter
--unplug the HDMI from the body, then plug it back in
--power up HDMI device or powered adapter
--insert battery and power up camera

Hope this is a permanent solution.

I reposted this so it is easy to search for - should it be a sticky on the forum?

* try to start the camera with no card inside
* in any case, make sure the card is not flagged as bootable if it doesn't have the full ML installed

Strange. I sometimes run my camera without the ML card and haven't had such issues. Maybe if you remove the ML firmware, and then reinstall it?

I had read that too, but dismissed it because during the time of shooting this didn't have a HDMI monitor attached. But since you posted it, I decided to attach my HDMI monitor and see what happened.

Color me surprised, it started to display an image in movie mode. After that, with the monitor unplugged, the LCD seems to be working like there was never anything wrong now. It displays fine in movie mode. I'm able to press live view mode in shooting mode and I get image.

The solution appears to be plugging in an HDMI monitor EVEN THOUGH the error started to occur WITHOUT an HDMI monitor attached.

Camera works fine now with ML card, with normal card, and without card. In all modes.

I can't explain the solution though.

I would bet somewhere in the camera's internal flash memory a switch got thrown making it think a monitor was attached. You had to actually attach the monitor than remove it to flip the bit back to off.

Yes. Had to be... but the question I have is "how"? Again I wasn't there, but according to my friend, it shot for about 6 hours already when he noticed the screen wasn't coming on after taking a picture in timelapse with the intervalometer attached. He assumed it was a power issue, so he replaced the batteries. And still nothing... I think he assumed, as I did when I first saw it, that it wasn't powering up... but what was happening was that for whatever reason it was looking for an external display.

Weird... but at least we know now... And I hope this will help someone else solve this weird problem in the future.
