Shotgun mic recommendations

the rode ntg1 is a fairly popular mic. for its price, it has great results.

$270 for mic, short xlr cable and shockmount.

I bought that kit and the cable it comes with has a 90º connector on the mic end. It interfered with the handle if pointed down and didn't work very well pointed up either. It worked OK with the Panasonic mount pointed up, but I liked the shockmount in the kit better.

I ended up getting a new cable with both ends straight.

Audio Technica M/S mikes are great. the 835ST and the 815ST. I'd recommend a phantom powered mike over a battery powered cheaper mike...

i got the audio technica at875r and am very pleased with both the quality of the sound it produces and the size. its a little 'hot' and the levels need to be turned down a bit, better than the opposite. and it is super small and fits the hmc perfectly.

i got a 12" right-angle to right-angle xlr cable, but recommend going with a right-angle (female) to straight (male) so that you can plug into input 2. i rotated my connectors to fit into input 1 without any trouble, but they won't rotate enough to plug into input 2 without getting in the way of the hand grip.

I have a Sennheiser (sp?) ME64/66 combo w/K6 power module, and have been happy. For the money, it's not a bad mic. One note... the ME6x series tends to be hot, so you'll need to turn down the levels a bit when recording.

I have a Azden SGM X1 mic.. when It's mounted to the right arm shock mount, it tilts the balance of the camera so that when I shoot in low mode with the top handle, the camera is always tilted towards the right.. annoying!

Shotgun Mic?

Shotgun Mic?

Can anyone give me a recommendation for a good general-purpose shotgun mic that fits well with the HMC150?

Thanks,

-Brian

I have read extensively about the HMC150 (and other camcorders), but haven't researched mics at all. I am buying the HMC150 to record school performances, wedding receptions for friends, etc. I am set with the camcorder, but for the mic:

1) is the on-board mic not adequate for these purposes? If not, anyone have a $200 recommendation?

2) why does everyone mention a "shot gun" mic? If I'm recording a symphony performance, won't I lose sound as I pan from one side of the orchestra to the next?
