Hyperdeck Shuttle 2.0 - Another External Recorder Option

Thanks. That wouuld be a nice option to add.

Is there anyway to connect the SSD to a laptop using an ExpressCard on a laptop?

There are a whole bunch of eSata Express Cards on the market. Just use Google. You still need a SATA dock that can support eSata. That Voyager that I have (and posted the link to above) has both eSata and USB3. It even has Firewire, but that's ancient history for most people now.

Thanks. I was looking around and found the following which may work instead of the Voyager dock. I have the Voyager but these look much more compact for field work. Anyone have experience with these?

Icydock does 480MB/sec over USB2 and 3GB/sec over eSata- WOW :)
On the graphic on the right it says - SATA3 6Gb/sec- such a messy description.

Do these companies read what they write?

How does one keep track of the remaining space on the SSD? Is there a readout via the display?

thx

The only way we kept track of the space on the drive was math and timers. Calculating how much footage would fit on an SSD would allow you to know how much you had left. Since it didn't record the timecode, I reset the timecode to 000000 everytime a new SSD was popped into the device. Everytime I would press the record button on both the camera and recorder at the same time, that was my count down (up actually) to how many mins left.

Also used an iPhone stopwatch as well so the AC knew how long before we would run out. Left about a min of buffering room so as to not roll out completely, though we did a few times.

Its a very old fashion way of shooting, just timing how much footage you shot already, its honestly a really cool idea, old fashion techniques with a super new device. At first it was annoying, but the I realized... hey I'm shooting footage that is film quality, and like a film camera, but not paying a cent for processing...

So yeah, I think we've gotten spoiled and even I too complained at first, but a sharp mind will keep track of everything just fine and we never really had an issue with how much time was left, unless someone forgot to push stop.

I'm guessing it wouldn't be hard for BlackMagic to add a feature for a toggle button that causes the output to display status of the SSD and other information (like that DISP button).

If I connect the HDMI output of a camera to the SmallHD DP6 and the SDI output of the DP6 to the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, will th Shuttle 2 be able to record when I press record on the camera ?
Does the HDMI to SDI conversion allow for SDI triggering ?

Here's a blog which has some interesting Q & As regarding the FS-100, including an answer to the HDMI/SDI triggering question from a Sony Product Specialist:

http://notesonvideo.blogspot.com/2011/04/sony-chat-on-nex-fs100.html

Also, I guess I don't quite understand the original question, since why not go SDI from the camera to the recorder and then SDI (or HDMI for that matter) from the Shuttle to the monitor? The Shuttle has both HDMI in/out & SDI in/out for that reason.

The hyperdeck does record dnxhd .mov files that can be opened in Vegas and Premiere. I would imagine after effects can open
them as well. One note: The data that gets through to Vegas and Premiere seems to be 8 bit and not the full 10 bit. If you want
to get the full 10 bit you might need to record as mxf and use a plugin or figure out how to make B.M/Davinci Resolve open
the file and spit it out into something 10 bit that you can read. Also be aware that the hyperdeck needs Mac formatted drives which
are difficult/require third party software to read. Such third party software may do interesting things/have side effects for other
types of DTE equipment you may use. I found that it prevented me from reading my Firestores until I got rid of it.

The workflow is complicated for windows users.

thnks
could anyone post a 2 seconds video shot on QT dnxhd with a camera that outputs 10bit full range (like the f3 slog) in a high contrast scene to test?

I am a bit late getting on with new technologies, but I got a Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 for a little while to experiment and wanted to post a question about it and also some findings.

There are 4 recording options now:
Uncompressed QuickTime
ProRes Quicktime
DNxHD Avid MXF
DNxHD Quicktime

What is the skinny on the "gamma" issue, or format that can't record over 100IRE?

Also regarding the record triggering, incase anyone is having the same issues I did getting the F3 to trigger the deck I found that after powering up the unit if you press the STOP button on the HyperDeck the F3 will trigger it no problem. No idea why it won't otherwise.

What do you mean?

Because every time the Hyperdeck boots, it boots in playback mode. Pressing stop switches between playback and recording modes.

I don't know what I mean, that is why I am asking for the low down.

One of the recording formats clips at 100IRE from what I recall reading in a post, not sure but want to know for sure.

I record in DNxHD and have no problems with gamma shift. Just take some footage and open it up with RGB parade scope up. Your answer will be shown on the parade scope.

The business about the unit booting in playback mode is true. Hitting the stop button once toggles it into record mode.

I also had an issue the other day where I had both outputs, the HD-SDI and the HDMI ports occupied and it wouldn't trigger a record. Unplugged the HDMI out and the record trigger worked.

On the whole, I really like the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 given the cost and how much the alternatives are. The only other unit the piques my interest is the SD Pix 240i but the cost and more importantly the power draw requirements are disincentives.
