Hyperdeck Shuttle 2.0 - Another External Recorder Option

In the same time Cineform is great codec- most universal and highest available quality of all intermediate ones. Version up to 10bit/HD/4:2:2) is free now.

Please post up a link to the page where you can get this. I have looked through the Cineform/Go Pro site and cannot find it.

Thanks!

I don't get it. I installed the software expecting to see the cineform codec show up in my NLE, Premiere Pro, but doesn't. Tried GoPro Studio. It won't import files. I presume it will work with GoPro files as it should.

Is there a workaround?

Hmmm- strange- I checked Vdub 64bit and codec is there also. Please download VirtualDub and check if you see it there. Run it, go to Video/Compression tab and check if you see it there. I think Premiere works with VFW codecs, so no reason not see it there. I see it in different apps which support VFW.
GoPro Studio import only certain type files, so you can't use it to convert all files.

Got it to work. I'm using a Mac edit station. Shows up under "QuickTime codecs as "GoPro-Cineform HD/4K/3D".You have to select QuickTime first then wade through all the codec choices to find the GoPro one. If you have a lot of codecs installed from Sony (MainConcept), Red, BlackMagic, AJA, etc., it can be confusing. So far it looks as good as people have been saying. Plays nicely with Premiere. Encode time is a bit slow though. Good to have an alternative to ProRes aside from DNxHD.

Thanks for pointing this out. The other alternative is spending $300.

CF itself is very fast and well optimised- it's down to Premiere to slow it down (probably all runs in one core).
You can try some other app- not Premiere, but I stay away from MAC, so can't advise.

I think CF package is worth even more than 300$. It has many tools, including RED->CF converter, which is very fast and has lots of features. FirstLight active metadata technology is worth 300$ itself :)

YES!!!!!
Thank you for listening Blackgmagic

What's new in HyperDeck Utility 2.5 BETA 1

• Support for Avid DNxHD 220x recording to a Quicktime MOV file
• Timecode input support via RP-188
• Automatic record trigger via SDI record start/stop flag and incrementing timecode detection

is this available for download? I don't see it on their page.

EDIT

disregard. found it

Downloaded that test clip, thanks for that, YESS finally it played back in QT right away. Now we're talking.

Have another important question... SSD's... The 1.0 v of the unit only worked with a VERY SMALL amount of SSD's that were extremely fast but also rare and/or expensive. Now that the SSD speed doesn't have to be so blazing fast to handle uncompressed, is anyone testing regular "unverified" SSD's that are slower but can handle the compressed footage speeds?

I know this is not ideal bc then you couldn't use these drives for Uncompressed, but I think I'd only shoot with 1-2 drives doing that, but the rest would be nice to swap them out like sxs cards and would be much easier to get more if I could just buy an off the shelf SSD without worrying about manufacture or special + version of a rare drive.

Would love to know this

Since the Shuttle 2's DNxHD video is compressed at about 6:1, it should work with somewhat slower SSD drives. With all the audio tracks, the DNxHD MOV files are at ~ 238 Mb/s (~30 MB/s), which could be handled by even mechanical drives. Putting a mechanical drive in the Shuttle 2 probably wouldn't be such a good idea, though, since the drain on the battery would be excessive.

I just downloaded the new firmware now that it records DNxHD.mov files, and have been doing tests for the last couple hours to come up with a good workflow. I will have to do a few jobs with HDMI while I wait for my custom mini SDI to SDI cables to be made, so I am investigating decent pulldown removal workflows. I am using the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 on my AF100, and on the AF100 you can't send a 24Psf signal out the HDMI (not sure about the F3). Anyway all the routes I've tried so far seem to work, but unfortunately change the gamma of the original image. I've tried Compressor, both to DNxHD and ProRes, and I've tried JES Deinterlacer. An ideas?

ffmpeg, ffmbc can convert DNxHD properly keeping 10bit if you want, eg to v210. In case target is 8bit adds dithering. Resolve Lite can also convert it properly. All mentioned solutions are free.

Psf does not work over HDMI- it has to be pure p format.

SDI flag recording not working on the F3, so we will have to record on the SxS too to use time-code recording.
The gamma shift is also very bad in fcp, i tried using a DNxHD sequence and a pro-res sequence even uncompressed sequence.

Can someone explain to a somewhat dense not extremely post-savy shooter what all this means for using the hyperdeck shuttle at 422 with Final Cut pro or for that matter Avid or Premiere?

Yes it does, actually not from the first time.
The first record has to be done manually on the Hyperdeck and then it will start recording with the F3 and stop with it.
And it's Time-code accurate however it starts recording after 5 frames and stops after 10 frames.

Do you only have to do the manual record once ever or with every new setup? Also, do you mean that you get an extra 10 frames after you hit stop?

Thanks.

anyone have a crazy over modulated audio issue? been testing it on a shoot I am on, shot a bunch of interviews with a wireless, mic level, and they all sound TERRIBLE on the hyperdeck, but pristine on the SxS card.
