Hvx200a

2. Add one more ND Filter that is darker.
Are you willing to give up the lightest one? Geography here is the consideration.
Probably not. The two that are there are pretty good. The HPX500 is of course better, with three, but the space concerns are understood. Truthfully I find the HVX's combination of filter and sensitivity a lot more useful than the DVXs was. With the DVX it was always a case of "too little or too much"; with the HVX it seems to hit the sweet spot more frequently.

4. Add the frame rate to the display
Which display? during record? playback? I know it does this. Details please.
You're right, it already does this. It's in the user bits; all one has to do is change the "counter" button to display the user bits, or alternately set the display to "all" or use the "mode check" button.

5. In camera Waveform monitor or Histogram
For focus? for lumenance, In the Panaosnic world our Histogram doesn't do Lumenance.
We want exposure information. The focus assist would be nice too, but the question here was about a histogram for luminance. Frankly I'd much rather have a waveform monitor than a histogram.

19. Fix the firewire sync so that it never loses a frame when you swap modes (CAM<->MCR) or turn the power off/on.
What is the application that needs this, I don't understand the need.
The issue is that the ability to sync timecode via firewire is "broken". It only works partially. Any time you turn one of the cameras off (as in, to change a battery) it breaks the sync and loses several frames. Or when you toggle between MCR and CAMERA mode, it loses frames. Unfortunately, by the very nature of the design of the TC sync system, the very first thing you MUST do is toggle one of the cameras from MCR to CAMERA mode. Which means that you always, always, always will be slightly out of sync.

Panasonic issued a firmware update that lessened the issue; I think they fixed the power-off maybe? But the MCR<->VCR sync issue remains. You have a potentially very cool feature there that is fundamentally broken right now, so fixing that would be a wonderful thing. (and yes, it's equally broken on the DVX100B).

Well, not sure how that one slipped by me.
Like I said - I was just amassing the suggestions that were made here, not checking or judging them all.

Consider it gone - I'll update the list after this round of discussion.

Agreed 110%

If no one has added this: BETTER COMPONENT D4 CONNECTION! This thing is SUCH a pain. If I look at it, the signal drops.

My only two frustrations that could be improved are:

1) Re-map the transport/menu buttons 90 counter-clockwise so they relate to the orientation of LCD display/menu System - IE Down is Down etc.

2) A way of making a user button for resetting timecode, it's so frustrating to have to constantly swing open/close the LCD door just to press that button.

Other than that no real problems.

Ok. Here's one I just thought of...

Concerning the option that allows one to program a user button to allow the focus ring to be used as an iris instead:
Please make this work when in manual focus mode as well (not only when the camera is in auto focus). The reason is when we use 35mm adapters one is not using the focus on the camera anyways, and sometimes can inevitably bump the focus ring and throw it out of focus. If we can remain in manual focus, and use the focus ring as an iris, this takes care of the problem of bumping the focus ring accidentally... And, it also has the added benefit of a large ring for iris control if needed.

Either that, or just allow us to disable the focus ring for use with 35mm adapters, and/or lock focus.

I also request that as many of the requests on this list that can be accomplished via a firmware update be incorporated as such (and not just a new version of the HVX). I've got two and I don't plan on replacing them anytime soon :)

The ability to update the camera via the firmware is a great feature. One that has not been taken advantage of.

I dont even own an hvx and im hoping this is what panny do.

I'm sorry if it's already been said but here's my request:

Take care of the 480/60i stairstepping/aliasing issue. DVCPro 50 footage looks gorgeous EXCEPT for those awful jaggies!

AVC Intra [50 and 100] would be quite an improvement in a ~6k HVX successor.

I think I'll survive the other problems at this price point ;).

Something like this would be the best gift from the manufacturer to the HVX owning community. I think it would be AMAZING to have all of these updates and not have to buy a new camera. At least the ones that would go for new firmware.

Hardware's another story.

Then the HVX200a will, by definition, be a camera that incorporates changes that aren't -- and can't be -- firmware upgrades. That is why I suggested that there may be no 200a -- unless a few important nonfirmware changes are made pretty soon, Panasonic will have to come out with a significantly redesigned low-end prosumer HD camera. As noted elsewhere, Sony, Canon, and JVC have interchangeable-lens models for about $10K or less, and Sony now has a half-inch model. How about a half-inch model with higher-def chips (global-shutter CMOS, if possible), built-in Hydra-like technology (if designed in, it shouldn't cost anywhere near $3,500), image flip, HDMI out, and a removable lens?

I agree. I'm simply requesting that the ability to update the camera via firmware be taken advantage of more fully by incorporating as many of the requests as possible... meaning the ones that are possible via firmware.... It's such a great feature of the camera, but until now has been largely reserved for allowing larger sized p2 cards to be used. I'd like to start seeing some real features being added via firmware.

Thanks,
Jason

All i really want for christmas is a Histogram..... and a built in lcd flip. it doesnt even need to flip at the DSP, i just wanna be able to frame......

I think someone may have already menitoned this one... but battery life left displayed in minutes would be incredibly helpful.
Looks like maybe I should update the list..... I'll get to it soon.

I ain't a pro so this request may seem obvious or irrelevant,
but is it possible to change the lcd display when using menu>scene file?

be great to have each option scroll one at a time at the bottom of the screen, with a live image to work on,
maybe its just me, but i find it really frustrating when i only have the lcd to work from, and the image is grayed out and filled with text while im trying to see what effects the settings have as i change them ,
defeats the object don't it?

Ideally, you would be making changes and outputting to a calibrated CRT or LDC monitor. The LCD isn't really functional for making small changes like those found in the scene file menu.

Agreed -- an estimate of how many minutes left on the battery would be great.

I have another idea to add to the list -- the abilty to switch from USB offloading mode back to regular camera mode -- that way we can use the built-in USB offloading ability of the camera to offload cards, without having to turn the unit off and back on again to keep shooting.

Also, rather than update your list in this post, how about creating a new thread with the list as the first post. That way it won't get buried as this thread gets progressively longer.

its true-

but you can get at least a rough idea surely?
i been using a Z1 lately and it works well on there

That's a good idea (I think at least).
I'll do that right now - and I would suggest we keep coming up with ideas in THIS thread.
That way things can be discussed in one place, and the list can be housed in another thread that can hopefully be kept a bit more focused.

EDITED TO ADD:
Okay, done and done -

Here is the Official 'Unofficial' updated list

I also added a PDF version just in case anyone at Panasonic wanted their own copy for reference
:)
