Hvx200a

I would like to see the same level of color tweaking that you can get in the Canon XLH1
Individual gain controls for the R G B channels...etc etc

The image out of the HVX is great - but more control is never a bad thing.
The menu options for image control that the HVX has right now are not much more advanced than what is available on the DVX.

More image control would definitely breath some new life into this camera.

UPDATED LIST OF REQUESTED HVX200A OPTIONS
I've done my best to organize them into groups for easier reading.
I've also numbered them for easier reference.

**NOTE**
The numbers are for reference only - these requests are NOT in any sort of order of importance.

____________________________________________________

LENS OPTIONS:

1. Interchangeable lens options.

2. Add one more ND Filter that is darker.

DISPLAY OPTIONS:

3. Larger & Higher resolution LCD Screen

4. Add the frame rate to the display

5. In camera Waveform monitor or Histogram

15. Focus Assist similar to that on the HPX

INPUT/OUTPUT OPTIONS:

16. 6 PIN FireWire port as opposed to the fragile 4 PIN

17. Ability to choose how HD is displayed on SD output: Squeeze 16:9 into 4:3, Crop 16:9 into 4:3, letterbox 16:9 into 4:3

18. HDMI output

19. Fix the firewire sync so that it never loses a frame when you swap modes (CAM<->MCR) or turn the power off/on.

20. Firewire output of all PN Modes

21. HD Output from Firewire port

CAMERA SETUP OPTIONS:

22. Option to flip the image at the DSP (not just on the LCD)

AUDIO RECORDING OPTIONS:

34. The ability to input more than 2 audio sources. (either 4 XLR inputs or 2 XLRs with 2 additional phonos)

35. Allow us to disable the on-board microphone.

36. Allow us to record the audio when shooting offspeed anyway

SD CARD/METADATA OPTIONS:

37. Ability to save ALL camera setup and scene file information on the SD card in 1 file.

38. Add the scene file settings and User file settings to the metadata.

39. Screen grabs to SD Card

40. A software keyboard so metadata can be changed in camera.

CAMERA MCR MODE OPTIONS:

41. Delete Last Clip function assignable to a user button.

42. Ability to playback any clip and auto switch to the appropriate mode.

43. Option to 'SELECT ALL' clips on a P2 card

45. Ability to format P2 Cards incamera without losing the volume name.

#46: Restore the ability to create the CONTENTS folder when a completely blank P2 card is inserted.

I'll add one to the "Audio Options" list: the ability to record ONLY audio, with no video.

Then one could use the HVX for audio-only interviews, rather than buying a Compact Flash audio recorder or similar.

Thats a great idea!
I often find myself switching over to DVCPro mode only to save on space when I'm recording ambient audio. But the ability to only record audio would be incredibly handy indeed. Good thinking.

Fantastic, Luis. Thanks for your organizational assistance!

No problem.
I figured there was a better chance of our requests getting through if they were easy to read instead of buried in the thread in no particular order.

I'll update the list from time to time as more suggestions come in.

Great this list :cheesy::cheesy: Maybe now all the forum members can extract a top 5 from this list so we really get an impression which are the most important once.

my top 5 : 3, 16, 30, 36, 42

Hi Luis:

Great job with the list. I do have a question though...

"21. HD Output from Firewire port"

I record HD all of the time from the FW port. Not sure what you are getting at with this one?

How about making the component and composite outputs work at the same time? Would be so nice to record an NTSC window version to a DVD burner for transcripts while still having the HD output for focus.

Love your idea of EVF and VF displaying focus enhancement and regular output at the same time. Brilliant!

Also, how about replacing with the flimsy D4 connector with component BNCs?

Dan

Dan,

Good catch - I was cutting and pasting and obviously something got lost in the translation.
I went back through the thread and found that that came from Barry's suggestion which originally read:

Enable/add HD output from firewire input.

I guess I was typing too fast and completely misrepresented what he meant.
I assume he was saying he would like to see the ability to pass through an HD signal coming in the firewire port (out through the component).
That way we could use the camera as a D/A converter for monitoring on an HD monitor, and also play clips off something like the FireStore and be able to output them in HD via the component output.

Is that what you meant there Barry?

I'll fix it in the next incarnation of this list.
Thanks for catching that.

Edited to add:
Glad you like the EVF/LCD Display idea - but I can't take credit for it.
That list is just a summary of the ideas everyone threw out in this thread.

Hey, I've personally e-mailed it to those that I know, so they don't need to be checking it hourly, I've put it in their in-box! :)

Barry - did you see the earlier post about suggestion #21?
Just want to make sure I fix that correctly.
Check out Post #150 (bottom of page 15) and let me know.

Thanks.

Hi Guys,

Need a little help in understanding some of the list.

2. Add one more ND Filter that is darker.
Are you willing to give up the lightest one? Geography here is the consideration.

4. Add the frame rate to the display
Which display? during record? playback? I know it does this. Details please.

5. In camera Waveform monitor or Histogram
For focus? for lumenance, In the Panaosnic world our Histogram doesn't do Lumenance.

8. Focus readings in Feet and Inches
Thought it did this.

19. Fix the firewire sync so that it never loses a frame when you swap modes (CAM<->MCR) or turn the power off/on.
What is the application that needs this, I don't understand the need.

The rest I understand, don't know what we will get but I will take the list seriously.

Thanks,

Jan

Hey Jan - I'll comment on things I had suggested, and leave the others for the people who brought them up.

5. In camera Waveform monitor or Histogram
For focus? for lumenance, In the Panaosnic world our Histogram doesn't do Lumenance.

A waveform or histogram for luminance measurements would be an incredible addition.
I'm curious to know if the histogram isn't measuring luminance, what is it measuring?

EDITED TO ADD:
Just looked it up and found a description of the histogram-like focus assist on the HPX.
So, to be clear - at least when I was suggesting a Histogram (or Waveform) - it was for the purposes of measuring luminance as an aid in exposure.
This is not to say that the focus assist features of the HVX couldn't use some revamping - I would definitely like to see an HPXstyle focus assist, or the 'Focus in Red' JVCstyle

8. Focus readings in Feet and Inches
Thought it did this.

The camera will show Feet in decimel points to the hundreth, but not feet and inches. So instead of "6ft 3in" the camera right now displays "6.25ft"

It would be a great addition to have the option of the decimal notation or inches, especially since most of the time we're measuring for focus we are using tape measures. Right now I find myself on set and having to quickly do the math to figure out the decimel equivalent of X number of inches.

Thanks for listening to us, and for taking this list seriously.

I meant pN output. DV Rack and the P2 Gear can't be used as a monitor when the camera's in pN mode, so if there's any way to enable firewire output in pN mode, that'd be soooo helpful!

Gotcha - and it's on the list at #20.
Well...maybe #21 will be what I thought you meant... the ability to use the HD component output and Firewire HD input at once, which would allow for HD CRT Monitoring in post as well as HD reviewing of FireWire recorded footage on set.

Jan:
Number 19:
This is b/c once you sync the camera's timecodes you have to switch out of MCR mode, and the cameras lose sync by a few frames at that point. This (although still very helpful) requires realignment in post. Anytime you switch modes, or cycle the cam on/off you lose more sync, so that by the end of a day you may be off by a second or more. The benefit would be if the cameras maintained perfect sync, we could just drop it straight on the timeline and go w/o having to adjust for accuracy.

I think that's what they are talking about.
Jason
