HVX200A or HPX-170

hey guys, alright so i hear from a friend today that Panasonic is coming out with a new HVX. this interests me so much becasue i'm in the market to buy one. i went looking around and found a press release about the HPX-170 but it didn't give me the information i was really looking for. Like when they're going to release it, price, and more of the newer features added. does anyone know where i could read up on some hard facts about both the HVX200A and HPX-170.

thanks
Brad

Here is a quick look at those two that you mentioned. This is from Pannys Website.

For professional media producers, the AG-HPX170 solid-state handheld camcorder enables high definition and standard definition recording, the widest zoom lens in its class, and a HD-SDI interface for connection to baseband production and distribution infrastructure, all in a lightweight 4.2-pound body. Building on the phenomenal success of the AG-HVX200, the HPX170 is equipped with three new premium 1/3-inch CCDs and a high-performance digital signal processor with 14-bit A/D conversion and 19-bit processing to deliver broadcast-quality, independent frame recordings. The HPX170 offers a 13X Leica Dicomar zoom lens with a 28mm wide-angle setting (the widest in its class), and a 20-step frame rate selection in 720p mode for variable-speed shooting in the 12fps to 60fps range to acquire fast- or slow-motion in-camera effects. The HPX170 is backed by Panasonic’s five-year limited warranty* and will be available fall 2008.

Incorporating these new premium quality 3-CCD imagers and the 28mm zoom lens of the new HPX170, is the latest version of the popular HVX200, the HVX200A. Offering both the advantages of P2HD solid-state variable speed acquisition and a mini DV tape mechanism, the HVX200A is ideal for producers and educational institutions that are transitioning from an older standard definition, tape based infrastructure to file based, high definition production.

I saw it at NAB, and it looks great and is feature rich.

The AG-HPX170 won't be available until September. Image quality is on a par with the HVX200A and of course that gives you the DV tape transition.

Best,

Jan

Jan, is that an official release date for the HPX170 or projected?

Do we have a price yet? Any word on a higher res LCD? I personally think the LCD is fine but there's a lot of people wantin' to know.

Is the HD-SDI out Uncompressed 10-bit AKA before Compression?

You rock! You did tell me good things come to those who wait, glad I waited (and got scared out of an EX-1). Thank you SO much for passing along so many requests to the upper level!!! We all appreciate it so much.

Jan:

Good job on the new features.

6 pin locking FW port -- two thumbs up
HD-SDI Out - two thumbs up
No tape mechanism - two thumbs up
Improved S/N - two thumbs up
Better sensors for low light - two thumbs up
Lighter weight - two thumbs up
Delete last clip - two thumbs up
More frame rates - two thumbs up

LCD - oh well.

any chance of learning whether a 8GB card will be bundled, and what the pricing will be?

Also, availability -- will be see good early quantities?

Now the 8gb Bundle would be Extra Sweet. I love using 8gb Cards, I think that's the sweet spot and I'm glad that they're re-introducing the 8gb into the line-up.

Having one included with an HPX170 would make a fourth card for me. Yum.

Things are still a little wishy-washy.

Sorry.

Am still in negotiation, Will have more news later this summer. Target is around the same as the HVX200/A. We found a couple of things yesterday in the menus, first time we were allowed access, that look very interesting and while I hate to be a "tease" I do want to carry the excitement about this camera. There are so many of your ideas in this camera. And I only wish that I got everything I asked for.

Stay tuned,

Jan

Are you in product development or marketing? :)

Wish we could have made it to NAB, but I was called for jury duty and it just ended.

Anyway, it sounds as if all the features are not yet set, so anything beyond what has been released would be a bonus.

These are interesting times for video.

Very very nice. Well, I suppose it's time to hurry up and wait!!! here's to hopin' for more good announcements.

I have to say Jan, I've always known you were one to listen to user feedback - but I am seriously impressed with how many of the requests on our 'wish list' made it into the design of the 170.

It's good to know our opinions don't go into a void.

Can't wait to put this new cam through it's paces.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go give my HVX the bad news.

Will the Firestore FS-100 be compatible with the HPX170 using a 6pin to 6pin cable?

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be.
All the Firestore needs is a DVCProHD signal - which the 170 will still be sending out.
So I can't imagine why there would be any issue there.

I, for one, hope that some of the 'very interesting' items that were discovered in the menus happened to be focus-in-red and pixel-for-pixel focusing options.

And if we have to sit on the sidelines until September, I cast my vote for a larger/better LCD as well. Would 'pretty please' help at all? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) Seriously though, Panasonic knows how to make awesome monitors better than practically everyone and I don't think putting them into the cameras will hurt external monitor sales to any great extent if that's the reason for excluding them. Fabulous LCD's are among the reasons I bought my Canon G9 and Nikon D300 and I've never heard an EX1 owner complaining about theirs either.

I very much got that impression. I got to really in-depth discuss it with the product brand manager for the HPX170 from Japan, the guy who knows everything about the camera and specifies what does and doesn't get added by the factory. Now, Jan probably has a lot more influence with these folks than I do, but I was able to point out many nice little changes or additions that we didn't see yet, and explain to him why that would be a good thing to do. He took many notes. There's about five or six months until the camera comes out. Fingers and toes are crossed!

Will the Firestore FS-100 be compatible with the HPX170 using a 6pin to 6pin cable?
I'm 100% certain it will be. The FS-100 works with the HPX500 as well as the HDX900. Firewire streaming is a SMPTE-certified standard. There's no fathomable reason I can think of as to why the FS-100 wouldn't work with the 170.

Won't work with the 150, of course, as AVC-HD doesn't stream. But it should be fully compatible with the 170.

It already has pixel-for-pixel, or nigh unto it (the magnified focus assist.) I asked calmly, politely, and then aggressively for focus-in-red. Don't know if that'll be happening or not. :/

I cast my vote for a larger/better LCD as well.
Me too! The new focus assists do help quite a bit to know you're getting great focus, but seeing that panel in daylight is still an unpleasant struggle. I've taken to using a Hoodman LCD hood, it does indeed make all the difference. If they don't upgrade the LCD (and on the prototype we were viewing, it wasn't upgraded) then the next best thing to do is learn to use the focus assists and get a hoodman or Century lens hood.

I often wonder why I didn't buy a Hoodman before a month ago. It makes EVERYTHING easier out in daylight. Spend the 20.00 - 30.00 dollars for one, it alleviates a lot of the daylight issues we're having.
