Am I the only person on the planet who thinks the HVX200 sucks big time?
Personally I regret buying a HVX200. I have not even used it yet and I'm considering putting the darn thing on eBay, why?
Because Panasonic are ripping us off. I feel like sticking with Sony and JVC.
If anyone thinks they can simply buy a HVX200 for £4,150 and go on a shoot; forget it! you will have to buy 2 x 8 gig P2 cards and either a laptop or a Firestore FS200, which adds about another £3,700 to the bill totalling £7,850. Yup, this is how much you need to spend to get your HVX200 working; crumbs, the price of two 8 gig cards and a laptop cost more than a Sony Z1.
And before everyone starts shouting about DVCProHD quality, I don't think so, why? I have one word that will sum it up for you "THE LENS". That's right, the lens is pants when compaired to high end broadcast DVCProHD cameras, which cost 5 times the price. A decent HD lens from Canon cost £18,000 for crying out loud. So the HVX200 is not going to give you anywhere near the quality of a DVCProHD professional shoulder mount Panasonic model costing £25,000; far from it.
What's more, I suspect P2 is dead-in-the-water as the PCMCIA slot is just about rendered obsolete by the computer industry; it's all firewire and usb these days. Also, the guy who invented the P2 system has just gone bust and so has his company. Apple's new Macbook does not support P2 cards directly, so Panasonic are the only company in the world who support P2; for how long I wonder?
Oh, did I mention the over-inflated price of the P2-Store, rip off, or the glorified P2 card reader, rip off again, whoever heard of a card reader costing £1,000; ha!
So I'm starting to believe the HVX is a big rip off in every way.
If anyone were to ask me if they should buy a HVX200 I would say "no way!" wait a year until Sony announce the Z2 at NAB 2007, it will be ten times better and the solid state memory chips it uses will be 20 times cheaper. And it will be future proof; unlike this big bloody P2 cards.
Now I don't want to upset all you HVX200 users, remember, I just bought one of the things, I just haven't used it yet because I can't afford to. But please, somebody tell me I'm wrong here, personally I don't think so and I doubt there is anyone on here who could disagree with me.
It is like buying a new car with no engine or wheels, or am I missing something.
