HVX200 vs HVX200a -- a side-by-side low-light comparison

I got my new HVX200a in last week, and decided to put it up against my HVX200.

Since better low light performance is the big difference between the two cameras, that's what I decided to test.

EDIT: Since this test has proven to be more popular than I originally believed, I created a dedicated page on my website for it, along with some stills. All future tests will be posted there.

You can see the results of my testing here: http://www.twistedlincoln.com/reviews/hvx200-vs-hvx200a

-- edit -- Very freakin' nice. No kidding about the night and day difference, either!

Wow, it might of taken a bit of time for my poor wee imac to play that back... interesting codec..

but yea, wow, as long as the HPX170 matches this as soon as its out im sold. That is amazing.

Nice demo, TwistedLincoln. If you're open to a suggestion, I'd recommend split-screening it side-by-side instead of showing one after the other. But thanks for taking the time to do this!

Thanks for putting this up. Nice to see the difference in average lighting conditions. I think its the quality of the vid and the codec, but I'm not really that floored by the difference. Colour looks better out of the camera it seems (again a bit of CC can fix that for the 200), the sensitivity is better for sure but its not huge and the noise, well its really really difficult to tell with this vid/codec.

I 2nd the H.264 request!

Thanks for putting this up, tho.

If you are running Microsoft Windows, you'll probably need to install Directshow codecs to play Ogg Theora. You can get those codecs here: OggCodecs

If you are running Mac OS, you'll probably want to get the Quicktime components. You can get those from this page: Xiph.org Qucktime Components.

Users of GNU/Linux like myself will most likely just be able to play it back without installing anything.

No need to install any codecs if you use the latest version of the cross-platform VideoLAN Player: http://www.videolan.org/

Thank you, TwistedLincoln. Seems to be quite an improvement. The blockieness of the noise - is it because of the web compression?

Also I would like to know how much gain you can use on the 200a until you reach noise levels of the 200.

Thanks T.L.

1. The 200a appears to be considerably brighter.

2. Cine D is way noisy regardless of which camera.

3. I like your home theater. What are the big black boxes on either side? ...speakers?

(btw: VLC works with OGG)

OMGZ! Panasonic r-o-c-k-s!
That looks like more than half a stop to me... well maybe it just feels like more. hehe

Noise seems reduced by like 80%

all with a delete last clip button!!! heaven :love4:

Delete Last Clip isn't on the 200A (which was tested here), that's on the 170. We expect the 170 will have similar performance since it has the same chipset as the 200A.

Cripes, not another weird codec. Sorry to be a bother, but could you put this up as H.264? Thanks!

It always bothers me how people on a Video board complain about codecs. I think DVXuser should be the place where you could post any kind of encoded video and people are able to play it back. Whats the matter? Just use some good codec pack or something like the vlc player. It's as easy as that. He posted a test for YOU guys and you start complaining and whining with a request for another version instead of looking for the problem on your side.

Thanks alot for this test TwistedLincoln! Makes me wanna buy an HVX200a now :D

Btw. are those speakers from Mordaunt-Short?

no, do what I do... google the codec for players, install the player, play it, then uninstall that dang thing :D
